FNB ATMS go wireless

All FNB ATMs will switch from fixed-line infrastructure to the much faster GPRS, 3G and HSDPA platforms provided by cellular group MTN.
Stupid teklom never saw this one coming.
See teklom - you tried to FORCE them to use DIGINET, by refusing to provide any gaurantee's on ADSL, and theyre just moving to something else.

BWAAAAAAAAAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH !

P.S Sell the teklom shares NOW !
The writing is still invisible, but it's on the WALL !

LOL @ telkom

isnt sizwe the ex telkom ceo the new fnb ceo ? and if so big LOL at even the ex telkom ceo not wanting to use telkom :D

Hmm. Everyone and their kid sister seems to be looking at ways of keeping their cash away from Telkom...

Good stuff! :D

Ouch - there's a pain that lingers eh Telkom :D

WHAT ARE THE IMPLICATIONS....
Of some uber cybergeek using a packet sniffer to check out the action...

And getting anything discernible?

I dont think they'd use any run of the mill encryption for something like that but then this is SA and cutting corners generally leads to lower expenses.

Employee or ex-employee on a heist gang's payroll then...

This ain't new. There are a number of 'independent' ATMs (like some in 7-11, or in hospitals) that have been running on GPRS for at least 2 years now.

Or setting up a fake low range cell and tricking the ATM into connecting to that and then sending it the info you want it to get. :D

The pins blocks are rather obviously encrypted (to international Visa/Mastercard standards) but everything else is in the clear not that it is much use to you unless you are a Nigerian syndicate making fake cards.

How hard can it be

How hard can it be to decrypt a 5 or 4 numerical digit pin?

Banks vs Telkom

Imagine if the banks would take on Telkom regarding the high cost of telecoms in this country. The banking industry is heavily reliant on telecoms. If the cost can come down, what is the chances the banks will be able to reduce their service fees? Just wondering....

Might even put the banks in a good light for a change.

Ha ha ha... the same chance of Telkom dropping prices with their attitude :D
Maybe they'll prove me wrong.

Is definitely possible but you would need some sort of physical access to a HSM (Host Security Module) and those things are kept under lock and key ... they tend to self destruct if they think they are being tampered with :).

Knowing quite a lot about SSTs and the sheep that use them, I predict that FNB customers will not take kindly to potentially having different accounts popup next to different buttons [based on availability of funds]. People tend to develop a routine relationship with SST application leadthroughs, and often try pressing a button before screen rendering, so potentially having a different account next to the button they're expecting to press, will cause confusion and irritation - especially since many don't really look at what is on the screen.
