FNB CEO explains and apologizes for downtime

Sorry but this is no excuse. Surely you have a DR plan in place, and one that is tested and audited? This is simple cost cutting from a poorly run IT department. The CIO should be sacked. Simple solution - run virtual and use a DR system like SRM...

With the systems/data they run on a daily basis, virtual will have whole mother-load of problems. Better solution would have been back-up sites. I know Nebank has at least 6 of them, I had to install a Tape robot at one of the back-up sites some time ago.

Yeah, good luck virtualizing high transaction systems like those used for ATM transactions and whatnot, at the scales used by banks.

Sure! A simple VMware solution will easily replace millions of rands worth of mainframes and massively distributed server clusters...

:wtf:

What next hammell...back it all up to your external hard drive? "Ai jirre... Iemand het die klok hoor lui, maar weet nie waar die bel hang nie.

Yeah because data is always 100% consistant in DR and banks only have one single system and it can easily be run on VM/Monkeysoft.

You must fix desktops/pump petrol/sell product for a living.

I don't like that they've lied and said their system is back up and running. Many people, including me, still can't access their internet banking at all.

FNB consultant confirmed that quite a few users are still down. They've had 3 frikking days, starting to lose patience!

Actually by going virtual you'll have more computers going down should the host go down... and your virtual replication is not working properly.

Had my share of fun trying to track down issues with corrupted VM's...

It's not a lie though. There are many many systems behind the scenes processing stuff you can't imagine that are working fine. Problems with a few users are minor in the scale of what happened, im sorry to say. No comfort for you I know, but on the whole it's up.

Hmmm - typical responses from South African IT "experts"... No wonder virtualisation is in such a sad state in SA.

Yes I am a petrol attendant - you've got me... I can't wait for your next crafty retort!

Any you say this because of what evidence?

I say this because I've worked with said systems in the past. I know what it takes and how it works. You can virtualize a whole lot, and all the banks have done so where possible, believe me, but with the transactional stuff... not a chance of going completely virtual.
