I am currently on Vodacom prepaid, and their prices on data is killing me. I only use around R50 on voice, but 1GB data is R149.

Searching around, I see Afrihost and FNB connect can offer excellent deals on month-to-month contracts (no 24 month contracts for me).

As a FNB level 5 customer, I get some nice deals (extra data for banking, etc). Afrihost is slightly more expensive than FNB connect for a similar deal.

The difference seems to be limited coverage on FNB connect (Cell C???) vs excellent coverage from Afrihost (MTN).
On FNB, LTE coverage is limited to Joburg/Centurion/Pretoria (where I spend most of my time), but 3G is more widespread over the rest of the country.

So what are your opinions? Do you use one or the other and what is the experience like?

I'm on FNB Connect. Data speeds are slow. Not sure how much of an issue that is for you, but I cannot game on it, latency is bad and I get 5-25% packet loss on average. For general internet usage it's okay though.

Had to fall back to FNB Connect data for a week, and while overall it's fine, there are times where browsing becomes pretty slow. MTN LTE is consistently excellent in performance.

I have had both and Afrihost is far superior in network quality. I am on an FNB Gold account and on level 5 for eBucks. I worked it out:-

Afrihost:- R298 x 2 = R596. This gives my wife and I 100 minutes and 4.5 GB of data.
FNB Connect:- R90 (100 minutes) + R245 (5GB) + R20 (50 SMS) x 2 = R710. 15% back = R106.50

So roughly R7.50 difference and the network quality is so much better on MTN.

Well this is a bit disappointing. I just had a look and when factoring in the additional "rewards" I get on FNB because of the ebauck level 5 (and premier account), the FNB package is actually around R100 cheaper than a similar Afrihost package.

I generally use my data for light browsing, online banking and e-payment systems (Snapscan, Zapper, etc). I've got fibre at home for the heavier use items (updates, etc).

Does FNB have an activation fee (Afrihost is R149)? Since the contracts are month-to-month, it might be worth it to test the FNB connect service for a month or 2.

Black Friday is next week, good deals will be coming from telkom and MTN!

I have feeling the mtn deal will be worth to switch to.

FNB is also advertising that there will be Black Friday specials. I will wait until next week, just doing the research so long.

Rather go for Axxess over Afrihost for data. Their prices are the same, but they also have a 3 month rollover of unused data.

I can't find the month to month contracts on their website. I have a single sim phone, so need combined voice+data

have to agree. connection can be spotty but if you dont stray too often from the major centres its ok.

If you are on Level 5 just get the Conexis X2 free phone even if you don’t use it.

Then you have 25minutes to sort out your voice and can spend the R150 airtime you must spend on data.

No coverage issues here so far.

They don't do voice only data, but this can be added to an existing MTN sim card.

I may try doing this.

Edit: sorry they do do voice but its VoIP

I don't think this is a completely feasible solution yet. Getting stuck on the side of the road with only Edge available.... seems like trouble.

But thanks anyway. I will look at what MTN and Afrihost have available on Friday.
