FNB app kisses tap-to-pay goodbye

First National Bank (FNB) has confirmed the discontinuation of its contactless tap-to-pay facility for Android smartphone users.

Jason Viljoen, head of card digitisation at FNB, told TimesLive that the launch and uptake of global digital wallet solutions like Google Wallet drove the decision.

Seeing the FNB guys fumbling with their app to pay quickly was always so cute  Always 5 steps and 5 minutes later. This was mostly when they still didn't support Apple Pay.

When you ask them why they don't use Apple Pay or Google Pay you are always met with some blank NPC stare and a stumble of words about how they heard from some distant relative how "insecure" Google Pay is.

Viljoen said FNB was focusing on simplifying “in-app customer journeys”....
Can they also focus a bit on decrapifying their marketing language? "Journey" has become the most nauseating cliche of the last five years.
Using an app is not a journey. It is a tool. It must be simple and do its work. A "journey" for me is when I can switch off my phone and not think about banking.

Slightly off topic but my question here is what is the best way to protect yourself from a situation where you are hijacked and forced to give up your cards and unlock your phone, essentially giving the criminals unlimited access to your money.

The vast majority of your money should be locked up with a LISP. Your bank should just be for the day to day.

Actually you highly mistaken.

Go to your NFC settings, make FNB the default payment service.

Unlock your phone when paying and whala.

The Google wallet is so much better.

So many companies obsess about building their own rubbish before just adopting a mature existing solution.

They definitely didn't know what they were doing.

Once you have your card loaded, all you had to do when paying was turn on NFC and pay. Two steps and that was it for me.

Sounds interesting, I see you said “a” LISP meaning there could be various ones. Please point me in the right direction

Fnb just wiped every single Huawei phone off the planet.

Us Huawei phone users now have no tap to pay feature.

Just tap with your card, even better, tap with your whole wallet if you only have one bank card.
