Hi,

I need some help (if anyone has had a similar experience) as FNB is not giving me any info on the matter!

So this morning I noticed 5 transactions going off one after the other on my FNB debit card, the transactions all say "Uber*Eats" for R644.55. So I immediately block my card etc. and phoned the FNB Fraud line. FNB tells me these are "overseas" transactions AND they noticed a failed transaction from Amazon on the 27th Sept 2023! I didn't get any notifications on this transaction!

The lady on the line proceeds to cancel my debit card and she logs a report. That's all. I asked her to cancel those 5 transactions as they were in a "pending" state. She couldn't do that. She said the fraud dept. will phone me back within 7 days, depending on how busy they are! I asked her how it's possible that 1. I didn't get notified on the amazon transaction? 2. How did they clone a card I never use online (I use FNB virtual credit cards) 3. Why can't they stop the transactions before it's too late? 4. Wil I get my money back?

She couldn't answer any of my questions.

FNB just doesn't feel like a verys ecure bank, I mean, logging into online banking from a PC... there's no multi-factor auth even available. Was this someone in FNB who cloned my card?

Anyways, I hope to find more answers here. FNB just don't care. Also, can anyone recommend a more secure bank? I'm scared to leave my money in FNB.

something similar happened to me, whole bunch of rapid transactions from overseas,
blocked card, FNB did eventually pay back this money, so their fraud department was quick in returning me the cash,

all banks get hit by fraud, makes no diffrence if its FNB or capitec.

Ok thanks for that! I just wanted some hope of getting my money back but FNB could not give me a guarantee! I'm heading to a branch now to make some more waves, hopefully it helps.

Complete the admin forms, you will get your money back. They have insurance for fraud

Take note, for oversea’s shops, no verification is required. I know that via amazon and ebay purchases

If the transactions are reflecting as "pending", then they've gone through but not settled, which is why FNB cannot reverse or cancel (only merchant/acquiring bank can cancel/refund at this stage). However, from the sounds of things the payments did not go through 3D Secure (no notifications) which means the merchant will be liable for any fraud. So you should get your money back. The chargeback process just has to be followed.

Ok thanks for the detailed info! I went to FNB, they told me to wait 10 days, there's no other info they can provide. Flip. I still don't know how someone can get hold of my debit card details when I never use it online, and I never withdraw money at an ATM. It feels like an inside job. Oh well.
Thanks guys! Have a good one!

A little security tip. Any online sites where card information is kept, only use a VC for the one purchase and cancel. The easier way is to just block and unblock everytime a purtchase is needed.
this is a brilliant idea, you dont pay for extra virtual cards, so you can make a dedicated virtual card for things like this and block and unblock as is necessary.

I don't understand. This should be a prohblem. FNB submit charge backs on those transactions. They reverse it from the receiver's/merchants account in this case Uber.

Their fraud system (or maybe VISA) declined an almost 40k fraudulent transaction on my CC the other day, also from some BS online merchant overseas. Auto disabled card and linked ApplePay cards and phoned/emailed immediately. They tried it on the day the card expired (dude was probably "oh crap, gotta try something!"). The "fraud analyst" handling this is a joke, I suspect he might be a bad email bot. Gave up on that conversation.

Not sure where PAN/expiry leaked from. Only used "reputable" online merchants, but someone screwed up.

Also got a funny message about 3 days ago.. Thank you for your purchase from AMAZON There was no amount but also a link to click on.(which I did not click on) . I deleted message and checked my cc on the app.. There was nothing pending.. Have now set my limit to R500 just to be safe

And now my debit orders are bouncing costing me R95 per D/O! FNB cancelled my debit card, not my cheque account! And I can't get through to FNB! Is this for real? Do they really operate like this or did I just get them at a bad time?

That's First Noob Bank for you.

Capitec bounced debit order would have cost you R7 per D/O.

EDIT: Why would debit orders bounce due to a cancelled debit card? The bank account itself should still be open.

Regarding your question, that's what I'm trying to figure out now. I've been trying to get hold of someone at FNB to speak with because it makes no sense at all! Each time I get through FNB cuts the call. Anyway, my Cheque account is fully functional (from my side) but my security company phoned me now to say they got an "account frozen" response back when they processed the D/O. Man this whole thing is so fishy!
