FNB plans to launch virtual mobile operator: sources

Hope they keep their price model on the devices. If they add data and air time, will they up the price and will it still be viable?

I would hope it drops. Cos currently they not subsidizing anything whereas the networks subsidize a portion of the device cost cos u sign a contract

They do not.

they should stick to banking.....first perfect their core business!!

i'm surprised we haven't seen a trend in the opposite direction - mobile operators making a foray into the banking sector.
i like this innovation from fnb. let's hope they don't end up a mile wide.

We have seen some of it - Vodacom M-Pesa, MTN Mobile Money, credit cards and the like. Maybe FNB's plans will make them look at more integrated services.

stick to banking (sorry if I'm late), give home and business loans etc.

And that gives no brand loyalty and then you find people leaving for cheaper better run banks ala capitec.

CEllC should sort out their over congested network first before overloading it some more. I can hardly make or receive calls where I live, jumps to voicemail most of the time and drops calls like you can not believe, even get kicked from the tower daily....

Id also prefer they fix up their actual BANKING side of their bank, rather than offer more other stuff that will likely just be another overpriced alternative to compete with 4 other overpriced services.

Indeed "Vodacom" credit cards were actually with FNB, and got migrated over to FNB when they got canned (bye bye 10% "back" from game/dionwired :/).

Damn, would have been pefect if they had used Vodacom....All depends on their rates I guess

Interesting... This could be really good, if they structure it properly. It was inevitable anyway.

SA market is beyond saturated. What makes this move even more foolish and dumb is the fact that they are using Cell C which has not realized any profit to date.

Should FNB fanboys be the only ones interested in this or would it be available to the rest of the SA population as well?

WTF statement?? I think you mean any non-FNB customers. I would assume no as what would the point in them creating good rates for non-banking customers? That would be them going out of their core business of making BANKING customers happy. If this includes lower mobile rates due to bulk purchasing, I am all for it.

Agree. This will be a value add product for existing eBucks members is my guess. Same as their subsidized uncapped ADSL. And if that is the case then this is awesome news!
