I'd like to hear your experiences in using the FNB Share Builder platform. Or recommendations if you have experience on other platforms that's been positive.

I haven't used it, but I considered it a few years ago. I'm sure it's a good platform but I was put off by their fees. EasyEquities is much more cost effective.

I was strapped for time when responding earlier.

Big EE thread is here.

Someone's negative experience here.

There are also loads of other threads about EE, so it might be best to search the forum if you want more info.

Another great thing about EE is that if you are part of their Thrive program, you pay less on brokerage fees, so I try my best to stay part of the program.

Give me a shout if you'd like a referral link :D

Thank you, I'll check these out and let you know how it goes. I was thinking about EE but because I bank with FNB, I thought it may be best to keep everything consolidated.

I used to make use of FNB's share builder. Due to the costs involved, it would never have worked for day trading. It was great if you intended to buy shares every month and hold on to them for many decades. I also preferred using FNB over EE. EE is still too much of a small company and I, today even, would not feel comfortable to have them holding on to tens of thousands of Rands, if not more, of shares on my behalf.

But, that being said, three years ago I dumped all my local shares and investments locally. I have moved most of my investments abroad or into Forex. I do not see any real growth potential for the foreseeable future on the JSE. I suspect hard knocks are still to come for anyone with local investments or shares on the JSE.

FNB offering is shafting you big time:

Monthly fee of R39
Fees are 0.80% (min of R90 fee) plus VAT of trade
Limited stocks and ETF to choose from.

At EasyEquities:

no monthly fee
Fees are 0.25% (no minimum fee).
WAY more stocks, ETFs, bundles, baskets, to choose from.

Sorry to barge in here... but what platform / broker did you / are you using for this? Still EE?

I would have to disagree because if you had two people buying EXACTLY the same ETF/stock on FNB and EE:
1.) the EE person would be up 0.55% on every trade due to fees and,
2.) FNB person loses R39 to monthly fees whereas the EE person would have R39 more to invest.

Over "decades" that would be a massive difference.

I am using InteractiveBrokers. Not cheap. I had to deposit US$10,000 to open an account. But since moving all my investments there 3 years ago, I have not looked back again. My portfolio grew at tremendous rates, rates you will never see locally.

Nice one. Thanks man.

I've been playing around with the Easy Equities platform for much of today. Although I'm not a fan of their branding and marketing style, it's pretty intuitive and offers way more options than FNB and at a much lower price.

The USD account is also attractive because you then have access to a whole bunch of US shares (Amazon, Microsoft, Google, Apple - these particularly stand out for me seeing as I'm in the tech industry).

Would be keen to find out if they plan on opening this up to even more markets going forward. Anyone know?

I'd be interested to know as well. I thought of asking before but then I forgot.

But then again I don't know if it's necessary for them to offer more markets when a lot of ETFs give a ton of exposure. Sygnia MCSI Japan gives you exposure to Japan, Ashburton 1200 gives you the US, Japan, Asia, Canada, Australia, Latin America, and Europe, Satrix world is much the same but with slightly less exposure for a lesser fee.

I understand your feelings towards their style. But I look past it because of the control you get with it. Apart from minor annoyances, I'm quite happy with them.

Would be nice if I could find similar companies with similar offerings so I could spread the money out a bit.
