I got a super weird email from FNB this morning:

Subject: New Banking Generation Statements Discontinuation
Dear *

As part of our continued journey to improve your banking experience, you can now access your statements on the FNB App.

Downloading your statements on the FNB App or online provides added security as the authentication process verifies your identity before your statement can be accessed.

Going digital helps to reduce our carbon footprint and helps you by always having your statements on hand anytime, anywhere.

For more information chat to us via Secure Chat on the FNB App.

Yours Sincerely,
FNB

So does this mean they will no longer email out statements? That would be bloody annoying.

Also got this and was left confused

It doesn't say anything about stopping emailing statements in the snippet you posted, so it's safe to say they won't stop that. Perhaps they are talking about posting physical statements that's coming to an end.

I was similarly confused. Subject talks about discontinuation, rest of mail just about accessing if from the app.

They did discontinue home loan statements a month or 2 ago, so likely they are actually discontinuing it. Highly annoying.

Oh, and about asking them on live chat: I had a question last Monday, and it took them 3 hours to initiate the chat. And no more email address to contact them on either - they're really trying very hard to not have to deal with any communication whatsoever.

This is super annoying. I've set up rules in my GMail to automatically file email statements as soon as they come in. Now I have to go to their website to download them?

Or even worse -- use the app. After I confirm that I do not want a personal loan, a credit card increase, a revolving loan, a savings account, move up a level, or an investment account, I am to download the PDF onto my iPhone, and then what? View it on a tiny screen?

My banker confirmed this:
Hi Eben,

Dankie vir jou epos.

Ja, nou dat jy dit aanlyn en van die App af kan trek, gaan hulle dit nie meer per epos deurstuur nie.

Groete,

I got an notification on my banking app that my statement is available to download today

Got the email as well, hoping it just means you can view the statement on the App.
I like to check my statements every month and skim through them but if they wont send it to me anymore i'm going to get lazy :X3:

So it does sound like they are expanding how far back you can get statements, with my banker saying something along the lines of not charging for older than three months any more. That would be a good move, I always found it annoying having to pay for a statement 4 months old when GMail will happily keep my emails for years and years accessible.
