Hi

I've recently joined FNB and I found out about their FNB Talk service that's on offer. Would anyone mind telling me how I would go about setting this up? As far as I can understand from other posts in the forums, all you need is a router that you configure with FNB Talk settings and an Internet connection? Does that mean you don't have to have a Telkom line at all and can simply use a 3G connection?

You dont need a Telkom line, unless you want to go the DSL route, 3g will be ok if you got 'good 3g, strong signal', restricted APN,s have caused issues in the past so be careful. The FNB account settings can go in the router if its a VoIP router with FXS port for a normal phone, or they will go in an IP phone or soft phone on a PC and the router will give you connectivity to the net

You can get yourself either ATA's (analog telephone adapters) these will convert a traditional analog phone into a VOIP device the phone plugs into the ATA and the ATA plugs into your network via an ethernet cable, you configure the device with the FNB Talk account details, or alternatively you can purchase yourself a VOIP phone, the quality of the call is directly proportional to the price you pay for the phone. Cheap phones normally have soft and tiny sound issues, more expensive phones like SNOM / Cisco etc have great call quality. I recommend SNOM or Cisco phones for any sort of business use.

Your network then requires internet access, be it via 3G / ADSL / Diginet / Wireless whatever, but like before the call quality will be dependent on your internet connectivity, VOIP likes lower latency technologies and un congested bandwidth.

Where would one get 1 of these adapters and how much would 1 cost? Do you think 1 of these adapters is a better solution than buying a VOIP router ect ect

I personally don't like integrated items, like the router with dsl wireless and voip one thing blows and you've lost them all, I prefer seperate items for each role.

The best ATA on the market has to be the Linksys PAP2-NA you can get them on Ebay cheap, I bought a few awhile ago for R140 each and another R90 for shipping, worked out less than half the price of them locally. Alternatively there are others on the market, like ATcom, Grandstream, Planet and others.

Atcom and Planet models at http://www.scoopdistribution.co.za/index.php?cPath=44_97

The 2 port Planet can be useful.

Alternatively I think Miro, still sell the Linksys PAP2-NA ATA units.
