Have any of you tried fnbconnect voip products? Well, you better try. It offers the best voip quality that I have never come accross with. Screw skype, I am done with them. I am using fnb connect xtra and I make free calls to my friends who are also customers. Believe me, the call quality is even better that vodacom...lol. Very very cheap when calling cellphone.

been looking @ a local voip provider, thanks for the input, maybe its time to give them a try

+1. Have used FNBConnect extensively for calling friends and family in the UK and very impressed so far.

One tip though, download the X-Lite VOIP client, and forget about FNBConnect's own VOIP client which is crap.

The cost to call a cell phone is quoted at R1.59 per minute which is expensive.
It's estimated that you use about 1Meg of broadband to make a 3 minute call and at a rate of R1.50 per meg from Vodacom or MTN this is an additional R0.50 so your call is actually costing you R2.09 which is extremely expensive.

The problem of using X-Lite is you won't be able to send sms and do IM. The FNB one has it's broblem but they always have new updates to download. I find it very useful.

True, but I use my cellphone to send sms's and I use Google Talk and MSN to IM.

ADSL bandiwdth is about 6.9c per MB. The 3G rates you are quoting are out of bundle too. In-bundle rates are 19c per MB at their lowest.

Try buying the data bundles from your service provider, you will find it very cheap. And R1.59 is at peak time but R1.04 off-peak. I think it's not bad.

Well, Google Talk and MSN are much porpular and you will probably find more friend there but how much do you pay for your sms? It's 35c at fnb.

Ja, I agree FNB's sms's are very cheap, but for me the biggest problem is convenience, because I'm not always going to be at my PC to receive sms's through FNBConnect's software. If I'm on the move or away from my PC it's far more convenient to just send and receive sms's via my phone.

I know FNBConnect have a client that will work on some phones, but it doesn't on mine.

SMS should cost no more than ~20c - I use FishText.com for that.
Good to hear they offer any SIP client, means my SIP hardware would work. But anything more than free to phone internationally is more expensive than Betamax.

You got a point there, hopefully they will develop a software that will work on your phone. So far, it's good for me. I use it on both my PC and Cell.

Well, good it works for you. But in SA, I don't think there is any provider that will beat FNB in sms. You must also consider that sms is too expensive in this country.

20c beats 35c I'm afraid. Works from my phone, and if the reply comes back in time, that reply is free, in which case 0c is cheaper than 35c. ;)

Checkout the fnbconnect.co.za website, they even have the calculator for this.

OK, I'll bite although you obviously have a vested interest in FNB because every one of your 19 posts have, todate, only being punting FNB connect and so I am sure I am wasting my time but for anyone else who reads this post I compared FNB to my ISP, Screamer's rates because I use them to phone a lot of the African countries I do business in and the comparison is this. I used the FNB connectchat packages to compare apples with apples as Screamer also does not charge an annual membership fee apart from not insisting you bank with them.

Angola
Screamer R2.09 FNB R2.17

Mocambique
Screamer R1.62 FNB R3.21

Nigeria
Screamer R1.89 FNB R2.01

Calls to cell nos are:
Peak
Screamer R1.40 FNB R1.79

Off Peak
Screamer R0.89 FNB R1.24

Calls to Telkom local
Peak
Screamer R0.46 FNB R0.55

Off Peak
Screamer R0.25 FNB R0.39

If you want to compare your FNB Connect extra bundled charges then you will need to compare them to Screamer bundled packaes and believe me you don't want to go there.

Another advantage with Screamer is that they carry their voice traffic accross their own network and don't let it touch the local internet cloud which accounts for the quality of their calls.

Ok, I just took the bait too......

So has anyone actually used this on their cellphone? I see the app is compatible with my N82 and it will be around a rand cheaper per minute than my MTN Anytime 200 rate. The problem is if it is too much of a hassle to use I'd rather just spend that one rand per minute. Business can't afford a dodgy phone connection!

I think you are comparing it to FNB Connect Chat package, compare it with ConnectXtra. It will be much better...

Well, with good 3G network coverage, you will not go wrong.
