Hi All.

I have a new FNB credit card and changed inContacts notification settings to 24/7. Problem is, I swiped for about R200 this Saturday and didn't receive any sms/email notifications. Is there any other setting I need to change?

Can anyone with FNB help me out please. :)

Thanks.

Whats the limit you've set for notifications?

Credit or debit card?
Did the machine contact for authorisation or did it just approve immediately?

Credit card. If by authorisation you mean my card pin, then yes it did ask.

No, I mean did it contact the bank for approval (dial up) or did it just approve?

Then the bank doesn't know about the transaction yet. You'll get the notification when the merchant device sends the batch through.

i've never understood why this happens. Can anybody explain?

Sometimes it doesn't happen until weeks later! It really messes with your bank statement, even when the money is 'reserved' but it's not showing on your bank statement at all.

The transactions are uploaded from the POS device in batches. From there it goes to the merchant's bank and from there to yours. There can be a delay anywhere in that process...
When the POS device calls for authorisation the money is reserved but it's not actually processed until the batch goes through.

Floor limits. Differs from merchant to merchant.

If the amount charged is low enough, the card is not on the hot card list, and, and ,and... our terminal will just approve the transaction on the spot and only process it at a later time/date in a big batch.

Oh alright. That makes sense. Thanks for that.

So I'm assuming, when filling fuel, they process the transaction immediately. Hence why I get the notification?

That may have been the case in the past but nowadays you can see the terminal connecting and declining if it fails to connect. I experience the delay as well and it seems to be restaurants transactions. Perhaps it's because the weeks takings are deposited as a single amount rather than lots of individual transactions?

Oh and re the OP I've been getting delayed notifications from the app this week but sms notifications seems fine.

Unless it changed since yesterday, floor limits still exist. Had a transaction yesterday and one on Friday that did not phone in at all. It merely did an offline pin verification and kicked out the two slips immediately afterwards.

Yip definitely do. They seem to be a function of both retailer and the card itself. Normally it's around R200. My cards seem to go higher, I've seen R600 go through without approval.

Never been able to definitely say that, but had the suspicion. We do not get enough traffic on our machines to build up a definitive pattern of sorts though. Had two smart-looking Standard bank Titanium cards last month that swiped for quite a few thousand without any authorization:

Could be based on trustworthiness (of the card holder) somehow as well?

Probably coded onto the card. I wonder if updates to the chip can be pushed out to the POS machine when it dials in?
