Time spent in a position does not matter, it matters where you finish.
Remember who won the league title in the year above? The team in the top four who spent the least amount of time there.
Liverpool fans know this very well I assume, they were top for 6 weeks towards the end, and ended up spending the last two games second. Some say they let it slip away
