Is the launch of ordinary 3G also on a city-by-city basis linked to the launch of HSPA "4GS"?
Do existing customers with capable phones and ordinary cell C SIM cards need to do anything to get 3G when it is launched?

Hi har

For the moment, the answer to your question is as stated here, on the FAQs.

Thanks Cell_C for the FAQ guide. Its great that there is one place where questions are answered.

Just two follow up questions that I'd like clarity on and I'm sure will be of use to all other users as well.

1. I understand that there is no rollover of unused bundled data. What is not clear is why Cell C has taken this decision. Is there a specific reason?

2. Regarding the rollout of the 4GS network to cities around the country. Your/Cell C's response is that we must check the local papers for news of rollout. My follow-up question regarding the planned rollout is that surely Cell C should be a lIttle more transparent and give us an indication of when we can expect to hear the planned rollout dates.

We as potential consumers will appreciate that much more than the current standard corporate response.

If Cell C is serious about their new campaign and really wants to be a force in the local broadband market they should do things differently than their competitors. This sort of response has become all too familiar and I for one would appreciate a bit more transparency than the current "corporate drivel" we consumers have become accustomed to from the current players in the game.

You'll catch a lot more flies with honey. Use it, don't use. Just my 2c.

@Cell_C, thanks but that answer only concerns 4GS. My question is about plain old 3G. Are you saying that 3G is not being launched at all, except for new data SIMs?

I believe that 3G is much more spectrum-efficient than GSM (for voice calls too). Probably it would be much more cost-effective for Vodacom to allow Cell C roaming on 3G as well as GSM, but they haven't done so because they would be giving up a competitive advantage and might lose customers to Cell C that way. Wouldn't it be nice if Cell C rolled out 3G and Vodacom quietly extended its roaming agreement to plain old vanilla 384kbs 3G?

Bump.

*Patiently waiting for a response to questions raised in post 3 above.*

Dude. The Cell C 4GS network IS 3G. It's just very fast and on the 900Mhz spectrum.

3.5G and all the other variations of the name HSDPA etc. are all 3G, they just have small differences in the software implementation.
