For The First Time Ever, iPhone Owner Loyalty Declines

For the first time since the iPhone's inception, the percentage of the smartphone's owners who say they will definitely or probably buy another Apple handset has declined.

According to research conducted by Strategy Analytics, a study found that 88 percent of U.S. iPhone owners are likely to buy another Apple smartphone, representing a decrease from 93 percent last year. In Western Europe, meanwhile, the total stands at 75 percent, which is a decrease from 88 percent in 2011.

While the firm argues that Apple is attracting new customers, it says that negative press has led to the aforementioned decrease in consumer interest for iPhones.

"There is no doubt that Apple is continuing its success in retaining existing user base while attracting new customers," said Paul Brown, director at Strategy Analytics' User Experience Practice. "However, negative press prompted by a perceived lack of recent innovation by Apple has meant we are starting to see some growth in the number of previously highly loyal consumers who are now reconsidering whether or not they will purchase a new iPhone for their next device."

Taryn Tulay, an analyst at Strategy Analytics, explained that "it is the shift in the number of those who are unsure whether they will remain with the same brand for their next phone that Apple should be concerned about."

Recent figures from Kantar Worldpanel ComTech shows that while Apple's iOS is increasing its market share in the U.S., Android's market share increased across Europe in the 12 weeks of sales that ended on September 30. Google's mobile platform enjoyed a market share increase to 67 percent in the region, which is a considerable increase from the 51 percent share it held last year.

Are we seeing a shift? If so, do you think Apple users jump to Microsoft's new Phone esp when we look at the new Desktop OS?

For Perspective Android users are planing to jump ship as well.

Nearly one in five Android users plan to switch to iPhone

Android may be the best-selling mobile operating system in the world, but it still doesn’t inspire the same level of loyalty from its users as Apple’s (AAPL) iPhone does. Barron’s reports that a new survey of more than 2,000 smartphone users by Robert W. Baird analyst William Power shows that 48% of Android smartphone users plan on buying another Android device for their next smartphone while 17% say they plan to buy an iPhone and 34% say they’re undecided. The story is much different for fans of Apple’s smartphone, however, as 77% say they plan to buy an iPhone for their next smartphone, with just 5% planning to switch to Android device and 18% still undecided.

And yes, in case anyone was wondering, Power’s survey showed more awful news for RIM (RIMM), as just 2% of BlackBerry users said they were planning to purchase another BlackBerry smartphone.

The survey also threw more cold water on the idea that a Facebook (FB) phone might be successful, with just 7% of respondents saying they’d be interested. The idea of an Amazon (AMZN) phone was much more appealing, however, with 51% of respondents saying they’d be interested in purchasing a Kindle Fire-like smartphone.

I wouldn't get an iPhone 5 but nor would I get any other phone that's currently on the market.

so you are opting for telkom fixed line,or you think maybe Alcatel will release a good phone in the near future

Or I'm opting to continue using the phone which I currently have.

That was an [-]idiotic[/-] interesting response from you :wtf:

Interesting statistic indeed. Probably the first bit of actually worrying news for the iPhone.

It is possible that without Jobs Apple is not such a great company?

Dafuq?!

Anyway. My friend had to upgrade so he switched from a 4S to an Android and apparently he is loving it. Me, I once thought that I'd get new Win8 phone but now I'm thinking sticking with Android may just be better. The only reason I would switch to an iPhone is for better battery life :/

Just how bad is your battery life?!

Not bad enough to switch. Besides you get apps like Android Booster that helps a bit.

But I believe the iPhones have better batteries (I stand corrected here) and if so it is about the only plus (for me) I can think off.

Well I know of a kid that loves the Windows Phone especially because of the interface, but will be upgrading to an Android phone running Launcher 7.

Main reason, piracy, he is avoiding the platform purely because he can not copy games onto it. Bad news for developers, good news for OEM's as I am sure he is not the only kid that thinks like that.

Well depends on the phone you get. I have had android phones that last a day and others that last 5. Also if that is your concern you can always look at a RAZR MAXX.

I must be an unusual schizophrenic then ;), I have an iphone 5, I plan on replacing it with a 6 when it launches, my work SIM card is in a Galaxy S2, but I can't stand the plastic cheapness of the newer Samsung so am now considering replacing it with the Nexus 4 when it comes available in 2 weeks.

Am I allowed to like both iOS and Android and buy both?

The sad truth is I owned a 3g, 4 and the 4s Iphone and will buy the Iphone 5 when they it's available.

It just take longer for some ppl to see the obvious.:D

We get it, you are one of the 74% that said they will buy an iPhone again.... so what?

No one cares what % you fall under, unless you have something to say about it :)

Thought his buying pattern would have said it all.

I would be quite interested to see what happens to the iphone figure if it suddenly lost its cool factor.

When Google starts making its own phone and starts pushing it into all the cool movies and celebrity hands it could get quite interesting.

If they ever started making it out of plastic we would find out.
