My brother got his account yesterday and it is 250.00 for 3 days - untagged and unregistered before the discount. Using that figure that is 1,800pm tolls.

Now everyone is saying ignore, don't pay, ***** them - and even we were going to wait to see what happens. But should the tolls not go away in a few months they'll it him for 6k to 8k which few can afford.

If we register at least there is a cap - and wanting to avoid the huge bill, you are actually forced to use an etag if you use the highway

The other thing which drives me crazy is that I can take back routes to get to work - but since etoll implementation that route has 2 or 3 main lights out every day - which means they're forcing you to use the highway and get a tag for the cap

Best thing to do if you're really paranoid is put those fees away every month into a savings account until something happens.

Which it probably won't.

I chose to put money into my e-tag account and drive without an e-tag. This way when the camera works I get charged but if the camera is a dirty or faulty then I get through for free.

You forget one thing. You would only get those discounts if you're using the tag (don't take my word for it though, the system is bound to be cracked).

Ja, if the gantry doesn't register the device as it passes under then you get charged the full premium rate.
So that's not going to help much.

On top of all the above, nothing in legislation has been said regarding the increases in the capped amount (to the best of my knowledge).

SANRAL is desperate to increase revenue, as currently they are already behind on payments and the rates charged can only be increased by CPI, which according to all projections will not be enough to cover the costs of the loan repayments unless there is a high enough e-tag compliance rate.

Their only real option if people are tagged is to just increase the cap. What is stopping SANRAL from coming out some day and announcing that the R450 monthly cap no longer applies, and the cap is now R3000 per month?

Exactly why we can't trust them and this needs to fail now, rather than later.

Is it possible a gantry is R20.00?
On that printed SANRAL statement an average gantry is R20.00

He reckons it's his unregistered, undiscounted rate - but mine seems to indicate around R6.00 which I thought we unregistered?

Kinda...there are reports of SANRAL fckin up even a simple cap on a monthly bill.

I thought it tops out at like 11-ish...but again you never know with these okes. If they can bill 70 year old lady who doesn't own a car and is in a different province then clearly what they bill has very little to do with reality. Or was it a ancient lady that never leaves her one horse town? Can't remember...

I do agree with the tone of OP's post though - this legislation the ANC pushed through pretty much means you're going to get screwed over no matter what you do. Either you pay a fortune, or you sign a pact with the devil or you break the law. Great choice there...round of applause for our fantastic government.

Alternate users pay an average of about R20 before any discount. This becomes around R8 if you pay within 30 days and R6 if you pay within 7 days. But if you pay within 7 days you are not going to get an invoice

Paranoid, forget it Don't be intimidated we all don't pay the jail will not be big enough to accommodate us all
