Thank you for your responses and opinions so far, they have been incredibly helpful. It's really been more than I'd expected.
I'll summarise how I arrived at these two cars:
-I need a car that is reliable above everything else. For this, I was advised to primarily look at Fords, Nissans, Toyotas and Hyundais.
-Vehicle financing is a necessity, so I had looked only at dealerships. This also restricted the age of the vehicle to ten years.
-I would ideally like a car with a little more 'meat' than something like the Hyundai Atos or similarly-sized. This is for logistical reasons, as outlined in my initial post, and for safety reasons.
-Beyond that, it was just a balance between mileage and price.
Those two vehicles happened to check all the boxes. I'm also partial to Ford because my dad owned a Ford Focus which I enjoyed driving, and whose engine was incredibly reliable.
Since my initial post, a 2010 1.6 Hyundai Getz with 90 000km on the clock has been added to the list. Having heard some opinions about the lack of power in the Figo, I'm beginning to like the idea of a 1.6 engine as opposed to a 1.4. However, I intend to test drive a Figo to guage the extent of this issue for myself.
