Johannesburg - A cousin of Robert McBride, former Ekurhuleni metro police chief, has submitted a complaint to the SA Human Rights Commission (HRC) after Bruce Fordyce, nine times Comrades champion, allegedly called her a "coconut".

Roberta McBride also alleges that Fordyce swore at her on the same occasion, and also insulted Robert McBride.

She said to Beeld that she'd gone to a party at a friend's house in Parktown North in April this year.

Early in the evening, she became involved in a conversation with Fordyce and a friend of his, who was later pointed out to her as a family member of Helen Zille, premier of the Western Cape.

Fordyce had apparently referred to the great role that the late Helen Suzman, South African anti-apartheid activist, had played in the apartheid struggle.

Roberta then said she felt that Suzman's role hadn't been all that significant, upon which a heated debate broke out.

One of Roberta's friends then walked past and joked that Fordyce should leave her alone "because I'm a McBride".

"Fordyce then became unusually aggressive, and I avoided him for the rest of the night."

However, when she was about to leave the party along with her children late that night, she ran into Fordyce again.

He allegedly asked her if she would be voting for the DA or the ANC in the upcoming elections, to which she answered that she'd be voting for the ANC, since the DA doesn't represent her aspirations.

She went on to explain that in her opinion that the ANC is the only party which supports affirmative action and black economic empowerment.

To this, Fordyce allegedly answered that she doesn't need affirmative action, since she's a "coconut".

According to her it seemed as if Fordyce had had too much to drink.

She feels that, despite their differences of opinion, Fordyce should not have treated her "so disrespectfully".

Although Fordyce has apologised in reaction to the charge sheet sent to him by the HRC in July, he has denied Roberta's allegations.

During a meeting with the HRC on Wednesday, Roberta stated that, for that reason, she cannot accept his apology.

"I insist on a public apology in a prominent newspaper. I'm also demanding that he apologise to Mr McBride."

Vincent Moaga, spokesperson for the HRC, said the HRC will take the matter further.

Fordyce could not be reached for comment on Thursday.

Oh diddums - the HRC for getting called a coconut ?!

A public apology for something said at a small get together ?

Hardly comparable to the other ' celebrity ' currently at the HRC....

PS: Heaven forbid everyone who bad-mouths McBride gets the same attention.

The Democratic Alliance is taking African National Congress MP Cameron Dugmore to the Human Rights Commission for referring to a radio presenter as a "coconut".

Is it racially offensive for a white politician to jokingly call a black Springbok supporter a coconut? The DA certainly thinks so. The radio presenter does not.

In a submission to the commission, the DA asked it to investigate a recording of a recent 567 Cape Talk call-in show in which Dugmore called radio presenter Kieno Kammies a "coconut".

It says the comment constituted hate speech and caused harm as it implied that a black person supporting Bok rugby was white on the inside and brown or black on the outside.

'Is that why some people call you a coconut?'
Dugmore's comment was part of an on-air conversation between Dugmore and Kammies about the dwindling support for the Springboks.

Dugmore, a regular caller to the radio station, expressed his disgust with the recent Bok race row.

"I am in two minds about whether I can throw my weight behind the Springbok team," he said on the evening show on September 5.

Kammies, a Bok fan, then said: "I am an ardent Springbok supporter (and) even have a tattoo on my behind."

Dugmore jokingly interjected: "Is that why some people call you a coconut?" Both men laughed, with Kammies protesting: "No, no, no, I've got a permanent tattoo!"

Theuns Botha, leader of the DA in the Western Cape, said that by implication, Dugmore was calling any black Springbok supporter a "coconut".

"After receiving complaints from various members of the coloured community, and eventually listening to a recording of the interview, I could not believe my ears at Dugmore's racial insensitivity," Botha added.

In response, Dugmore accused the DA of "clutching at straws".

"A previous caller referred to Kieno as a coconut, so I was referring to that. To therefore infer that I called him or anyone else a coconut is absurd."

Cape Talk station manager Colleen Louw, speaking on behalf of Kammies, said: "I spoke to him about it. Kieno didn't take offence. It was done in jest and we see no harm in it."

The word 'coconut' seems so harmless doesn't it ?

The worst case scenario is surely the classical cartoon of a coconut falling on your head.

Racial slurring ain't cool, but neither is vindictive oversensitivity.

He should have shoved a bomb up your arse and killed you and your kids.

Just like your retard brother did to other inoccent people, you should be lucky he only called you a coconut

Argh didums .... shall I get you tissue and a nappy?

I don't think any racial slurring is harmless, unless of course it's between friends.

How do you end up at party where you bump into a McBride?

I think the intended meaning is brown on the outside and white on the inside. Anyway I don't see how it's offensive, people have been joking about it for ages.

according to my knowledge this is a term used by blacks on other blacks that act like they are white...actions that are associated with being white include the like for rugby, speaking English with a nasal twang, etc.

In most case it's not much of big deal...until a white person uses it.:D
