My question is why on earth do we only hear about this now when it happened so long ago?
Why is the article so bloody vague?

This is the campus which I go to everyday and now this violence... :cry:

Durban - A Norwegian foreign exchange student was attacked and robbed at the University of KwaZulu-Natal, the Sunday Tribune reports.

Rakel Fastings, 21, was stabbed repeatedly while using her laptop computer in a classroom in the Shepstone building, at UKZN's Howard college, on Wednesday, 24 October 18:00.

Her attacker stabbed her 24 times, in the neck, face and shoulders.

A friend of hers, who was not named, told the Tribune: "He didn't say anything to her as he stabbed her. It was totally unprovoked. She told him he didn't have to hurt her."

The attacker, believed to be a student, dropped the laptop as he was chased. He got away.

Fastings had been in South Africa for four months, doing a third-year course in community development. She returned to Norway with her mother on Friday.

University spokesperson Nomonde Mbadi said the police and the university were investigating.

This is what baffles me. Why would anyone want to study "community development" in this particular country? Are we better at it than say,.... um... Norway?

The friend, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the incident occurred at 6pm on October 24 in Shepstone 14, a classroom in the Shepstone Building at UKZN’s Howard College as Fastings was skyping from her Apple Mac

Shame while she was using it. I hope they catch the criminal and find out his motive. I am guessing he got an order for a macbook and trolled class rooms until he found one.

It is only 11 days later. And nobody died. Why is this news worthy at all? It only paints SA in a bad light. Crime happens everywhere.

The need is here more than Norway, stabbing case in point.

I'm sorry, but are you effed in the head? Is there a goddamn need to stab someone for a laptop? More over, does a man need to stab a woman TWENTY FOUR TIMES for a laptop!? Just grab the damn thing and run. If she puts up a fight, slap her or just push her off. And no, I'm not advocating violence against women, just stating that there is no need for a man to savagely assault someone they can easily over power with minimal effort.

This country is messed up when it comes to the violence around petty crimes. There is no need to brutally assault someone for their possessions. I've read of people being murdered for cellphones and 20 bucks.

Um... perhaps because its something that happens here ?

Its about as useful as studying air-con making in the Arctic. The same reason why people come here to study HIV/AIDS.... because we been having it.
