Police in Pietermaritzburg have confirmed to Newswatch that between 10 and 15 shops in the city centre have been looted in streets including Piet Maritz, East and West Streets.
Police have been deployed to bring the situation under control. A number of shops are said to be closed and no injuries have been reported.

Newswatch has also received calls saying parents have been told to fetch their children from school.
This woman was driving near Retief Street when she witnessed the mayhem, which she says came out of nowhere.
"My car's been stuck for an hour in gridlock traffic. They're rioting on either side and trying to open my car doors. They were hitting my car with knobkerries, slapping my car and looking in my car. They're even stealing things off the back of bakkies. And they're fighting and running away.
They're hitting people with sticks. The scariest thing is being gridlocked in that and not being able to get out of you car. Literally for an hour I've been stuck with that form of intimidation," she said.
Earlier, police have confirmed that the violence had also occurred in Verulam where five people were seriously injured. Shops wned by foreign nationals were targeted through the city including areas such as Umlazi, KwaMashu and Chatsworth.
Yesterday, foreign nationals took to Point Road in the Durban CBD to allegedly retaliate against the foreign-inspired attacks that have spanned over four weeks.
