yes that's why by going straight on he kept that position, hence the penalty. As for the french having it in for 'english speaking' drivers, martin brundle said the stewards had 3 options when imposing the penalty:
1) drive through
2) 10 sec stop and go
3) 10 place penalty at next race.
the first one was more lenient (spelling??)
 
exactly so by going off track he gained a clear advantage

there is nothing wrong with that penalty, once again mclaren will cry foul but they must have thought that it could happen

that thought should have been shared with hamilton who should have let vettel through

yea i think if there was some sort of get hamilton cult out there, they would have imposed a 10 place grid drop rather than a silly drive through :)

it does take time, they need to go over it and make sure they dont make a mistake

There are no two ways about it; Hamilton deserved that penalty 100%. Saying he was already past Vettel is preposterous. It's as good as saying you don't have to break for a corner, as long as you are are ahead of the other car before you jump the corner. So let's see: The approach to corner X requires a driver to apply the breaks 100M before the corner. Driver A is behind Driver B and shoots past Driver B by breaking 50M before corner X, while Driver B breaks 100M before corner X. Because Driver A is ahead of Driver B (after completely missing the breaking zone), it's okay for him to completely skip the corner. LOL!

And that is beside the point. Are you suggesting he outbraked himself? If it happened on overtaking i would agree with you. But from the poor shots and what i can remember - he had passed and was back on the racing line and then "lost it".

I would very much like to know what the rules are in this regard. He "DID NOT GAIN A PLACE" by going off track at that point in time (against aToro Rosso nog-al :D) .......

This was certainly not as clear cut as it may be in your mind.

ever watch schumie stuck in 7th gear? How you going to pass someone on a 1km strait if you are one 10th of a second faster than car in front for heavans sake?

That's just silly Ivork. Everybody knows that there is no way for two cars to go through that corner without one of them going off. I can't say for sure, but I do believe that Vettel was still alongside (perhaps slightly behind) Hamilton going into the corner. Hamilton went way too fast into the corner (getting the jump on Vettel) and he was off line; therefore he could not get through the corner. It was a stupid and reckless move.

PS. It's really difficult to tell, so let's wait and see if we can get some different camera angles of the incident. I may be wrong, but I do think I'm right. Either way Hamilton deserved the penalty because that was a dangerous move.

Wonder if Rai car is now lighter and will be disqualified :p

Already checked that one out. His car will be ok because the part of the exhaust that came off is very light and he would've picked up lots of marbles on his way back to the pits.
 
tbh if there was a weight problem he would have been disqualified by Sunday evening
