Ive been looking at prices at these two models and without digging too deep into the smaller differences but the Fortuna is only about R100k less.

Why would anyone not spend the extra R100 K for a Disco 4. :p

Good question. I definitely would.

But wait for the comments about Disco's being expensive once out of maintenance plan, unreliable, etc.

Not if you use the Indy specialists who know the cars way better than the dealerships anyway. Note there is a new Disco 4 downrated version with coil springs etc that is R100k less than the normal one. Toyota are really overrated and overpriced in this country.

Vehicles aimed at completely different audiences.

The Landy is a premium vehicle - nicer interior, more bells and whistles (safety features, electronics) but these things will break and the Landy should cost more to maintain (again premium - higher cost to run)

The tuna is a very capable vehicle that comes with a lot of pluses and minuses - great offroad, reliability but a theft target and probably not as nice a day to day driving experience

In a year the Disco will be at the workshop, needing TLC. The Tuna will keep going and going...

Not entirely accurate - the Discovery XS is loses a lot of the fancier bits, so they are fairly similar in terms of all the bits and pieces (aircons, electric windows etc). The difference is the Disco motor is superb, the XS is downrated to 155kW, so increasing life on the engine and drive train. Nothing wrong with the Tunas, they are just very pricey for what you actually get.

The short answer is although the Landrover dealerships are somewhat bad, the cars are really good. The Fortuna is a hack job off of the Hilux, so not designed to be an SUV, you are going to have a much safer and better ride in the Disco. Tunas are also WAY behind in terms of technology.

Ask yourself these questions to decide:
1) Are you planning on doing a lot of off-roading?
2) Are you willing to spend an extra R100k on an SUV?
3) How important is the ride and safety?
4) Do you need to tow a lot or heavy stuff?

Yes to the above, go for the Disco, if no stick to the Tuna. Or better yet maybe look at the Ford Ranger and Everest as alternatives to the Tuna.

Absolutely agree with you Bern. That is why I take mine to Landyworx. :)

OK!!

So I have decided, I am not going to spend that crazy amount of money on a Disco as much as I love it, and oh how I do love it.

I think I am going to go with a year old tuna 3.0 D4D. . . . ONLY thing that is worrying me is the hijack factor. :(

Maybe you should consider the Chev Trailblazer. I have 1 now for 4 months and loving every minute of it.

Seriously look at the Ford options before you take the leap - especially second hand. Territory for SUV and Ranger for doublecab.

If you are looking second hand there are some really good deals for Discos, a Disco 3 is going to be a worlds better than even a new Tuna.

Until you read on this forum and the 4x4 forum about the D3 air suspensions issues...
D3 is for comfort, Tuna is for reliability.

OK - now we wait for the Hijack thread! :(

Have you even considered a Forester that goes EVERYWHERE a Tuna does??

I obviously would not be selling it to you, but it just saddens me when I see people ignoring one of the finest 4x4's available ( check on You Tube) for something that is not only not that great on the safety stakes, but something that will also be swiped from you at some point?
