Fortuna vs Disco 4

Fazda what is the consumption like on the forester?

I am SO pleased you asked that question!!

Having sold Toyota for a while last year, I can happily tell you that a petrol Forester is more economical than a diesel Toyota!!

The Foresters that gave them all a bad name were the Turbo XT models from 2005 to 2012. Please note TURBO only!!

In 2011 Forester came out with a new long stroke motor that is radically lighter on fuel. Now, the latest one is 12% lighter than that, but the OP is probably looking at a used one, and if he goes the non turbo route, he would comfortably be between 8.5 and 9 l/100

OK - now we wait for the Hijack thread! :(

Have you even considered a Forester that goes EVERYWHERE a Tuna does??

I obviously would not be selling it to you, but it just saddens me when I see people ignoring one of the finest 4x4's available ( check on You Tube) for something that is not only not that great on the safety stakes, but something that will also be swiped from you at some point?
:(

Fazda the thing with Foresters is they don't sell themselves. They don't have the greatest styling. They don't have all the gadgets, bells and whistles inside. It's only after living with one for a while that you appreciate the magnificent engineering that goes on behind the scenes. And it's only after many, many more years that you appreciate it's reliability.

Hi fazda, I am completely open to options and will certainly look at the forester. In fact I think I saw one the other day and it caught my eye. My only experience with subaru is when I looked at one of the station wagon cars and wasn't very impressed so haven't even been back to a subaru branch.

I am not dead set on the tuna but seems like the best value for money but I have only just set out on my quest for the ultimate family suv :p

Blue tooth, reverse camera, climate control, multi function display, hill ascent/descent, 6 speed auto box, USB, Radio/CD/MP3 - what bells and whistles am I missing?

God, it's difficult to shake off a negative perception in SA!

Glad you saw one!! SUV - NOT station wagon - go looking at Bruma or Bryanston - you might be pleasantly surprised!! :)

Until you read on this forum and the 4x4 forum about the D3 air suspensions issues...
D3 is for comfort, Tuna is for reliability.

If you want the comfort, otherwise you do what anyone serious does and switch out for OME or Terrafirma. A note on the engine, there are guys in the UK getting over 1 million kms already:)

Glad you brought them up!! Bloody nice cars, not sure about load capacity and towing, but in general great! You can't put big mud tyres and all that sort of stuff, but if you don't need it you can't go wrong. I would compare it to the Freelander 2 and maybe the RAV, not really the Disco and Tuna.

The new Forester looks like a Station Wagon, not at all like a SUV.
It's basically a SW with a slightly raised suspension.

I have not driven the 2013 model, but the previous gen is very basic and feels cheap compared to Jeep and VW. Objectively, the inside of the Forester is like 1ply vs 2ply in the Tiguan. And I realize I just made a comparison using toilet paper thickness. I still think the Forester is the better car.

LOL at Hendrix's comment :P

Slighty off topic, but I have had my eye on a Type R for sometime now. . . I see you can get one around R200 000 with +- 30 000 kM.

Are they a good buy? I would look to keep it out of plan as there is no Turbo. Anything else one should be aware of?

Keep a fresh pair of undies under the seat :)

Definitely not the fastest around, but performs bloody well for N/A. I love mine. No issues and I just went over 100 000km now. No real issues that I know of. You will not be sorry mate :) Also, just go look at the other reliability thread..

I have heard of the rolling issue. Apparently that has been fixed long ago.
