Fortuner, Everest or ...?

Saffas has an unnatural obsession with Toyota for some reason.
Toyota had its day last century. I don't rate their vehicles at all. Their interiors have more cheap and nasty plastic than a China mall. Now we know what happens to the stuff the China mall rejects.

Loved it. Best vehicle I ever had. Reliable, comfortable, roomy, fuel efficient, smooth and quiet ride. The 10 speed auto was an excellent decision after the 6 speed manual. Loved the gearbox.
Sierra XR6 - sold at 10 years old and the new owner wrote it off within a month because he couldn't handle the power. Overheated if you drove it too slow
Mazda 2.6 4x4 petrol - company vehicle that I drove for 5 years
Corrola 1.6 - sold it at 7 years. No resale value at all.
Corsa bakkie - sold it at 3 years and got a good price.
Ecosport 1.5 TDI - traded in on Everest at 3 year. If I lived in town this is what I would drive every day.
2nd gen Everest XLT 2.2 6Man - traded in at 30 months for newer Everest. Got a fantastic trade in. Would have been better if it was automatic.
3rd gen Everest XLT 2.0 10Auto - sold it after 14 months and got for what I paid for it. Owed nothing on it.
Sounds like an interesting run of cars. I have always had the concern about Ford being unreliable, but its probably just historical jokes about them.
Im pretty sure the 2.0bi-tdi with the 10 speed auto will be out of the range of what Im willing to spend, but it would have easily been first choice.

Sounds like you're set on the Everest. I like it.

As for the First On Rubbish Dump jokes, there's a reason farmers in SA and Norway are choosing Ford Rangers over Hiluxes lately.

I had the single turbo. A lot cheaper. Think it was around R30K less. Still goes like the stink. I bit deceptive because of all the gears and the noise cancellation. You think nothing is happening till you look at the speedo and tacho.

BTW I sold my last one for R545k. 26,000 on the clock, 14 months since first registered. Only modification was tinting s&g on all the windows.

Jealousy. Also they bought a tuna and regret it, but have to big it up to save face.

Wasn't so long ago that all the land owners were buying 4 tunas. Now many of the second and third hands are in the hand of the "plebs" so now they are getting Land Cruiser Prados. The wife can't be seen driving the same car as the manager! What would people think?

I had a territory AWD. It was awful.

Oh, nice and comfortable and powerful (and fokken thirsty) but every time (EVERY TIME) I took it on the beach I had to book it in afterwards because something on the suspension or drivetrain broke.

Were the maintenance costs high on the Porsche? I keep thinking VW pricing
It was under a driveplan. It could have been eyewatering...
Last service was 52k - but that included a new kardan shaft and rear brake discs and pads.

Just realised if it has been replaced then it's just normal servicing costs. Doesn't sound so bad. Sorry for the slight derail.

I think Labour was around R1k per hour so not crazy. Some parts cheap, some crazy expensive. Similar to the costs on my amg merc

So my wife has decided that due to Covid and international travel being out for a while, that we should really explore SA instead.
I like the idea and there are tons of little towns and random places we would like to see.
My 3 series isnt really going to cut it for cruising 100km+ dirt roads which are fairly common to some areas.

So I have been looking, Im not really interested in the smaller SUV's like the X-trail, CR-V, Kuga etc. Those all just seem like hatchbacks with a bit more ground clearance.

Enter the Fortuner and Everest, which are a lot more solid and have a lot more space.
So if you had a R400k budget and could choose between the two, what would you go for?
Is there anything else obvious that Im missing that I should consider?

Not really interested in a double cab, those things are horrible to live with on a daily basis.
For me the Fortuner is a bit of an off-shoot when compared to Toyota's other SUVs. I feel like the SUV progression is something like CH-R -> RAV4 -> Land Cruiser 150 (Prado) -> Land Cruiser 200 (300). The Fortuner is just a Hilux with 7-seats and a SUV body (albeit slightly better suspension).

I feel the Everest almost competes with the Land Cruiser 150 rather than the Fortuner (however they do fall in the same category).

The Everest feels bigger on the road. It feels heavier, and wider. However it does feel more well put together and more luxurious. It has more features and creature comforts. Objectively the Everest is the better vehicle - It trumps the Toyota in almost all aspects.

That being said, if I got a Fortuner at a good price, I would for that over the Everest. It just feels rugged and utilitarian. It almost has a drive-anywhere attitude about it. It creaks, it rattles, NHV isn't the best and the engine isn't the most powerful - But you can throw it at anything and it will survive. As long as you know it's not a 'Sandton SUV' it will be great.

Go test drive both, and request if you can take it on some off-road paths - and see which one you most resonate with. Be subjective about your decision and choose the one you will really enjoy waking up to and driving to the middle of nowhere with.
