Hello Car people,

I am not well versed in the motoring world, and would like some advice if possible?

Our baby boy arrived on Saturday, and we need one big car for the baby seat. The other consideration is that we travel regularly to Pilgrims Rest and Dullstroom for fly-fishing, and have to traverse quite a lot of dirt roads / epically crappy rocky roads after / during rains, hence why i have narrowed it down to the Fortuner or the Prado.

I am looking at a few 2nd hand 2005 / 2006 Prado's (4l VX 183KW) up to around 300k, most have between 90k and 120km on the clock, but noticed the Fortuner in a google ad - prices for a 2nd hand 4wd 3.0l fortuner with 20k km on the clock for R300k, this being a seven seater.

I know the Prado is probably good for another 150k km's, its a great car have driven one before to Durban - is the Fortuner a better buy because it is newer, or should i stick wth a tried and trusted 4l Prado?

Also - Petrol or Diesel? Keep in mind this will mostly be used for around town commuting, and the occasional weekend trip of around 800km return.

Fortuner falls over. :p older ones.

Prado > Fortuner.

I'm also in the market for a Fortuner.

mmmm if u on budget / value for bucks then go with the Fortuner, personally i perfer the Prado ..awesome car
guess that is what u pay for :)

Well thats the rub, i can go up to R350k - which gets me a 3 year old prado 4l with about 90k km on the clock - for that price i can also get a 3l fortuner with 20k km on the clock.

I do feel like the prado is a better vehicle, but want to know from the petrolheads if even tho the prado is 3 years old its still a better buy or not?

I can't imagine going wrong with ANY 3yr old Toyota ;)

....except maybe the ones with accelerator problems

Personally I would take the 'newer' vehicle. Pop down to a toyota dealer and drive both if you are in doubt

Everyone here will say the diesel, but me I prefer the petrol. I have the 4L 4x4 Hilux ( I know you looking at Fortuners but its the same engine) and that engine is awesome. Around town driving I get 13L/100km which for a 4L petrol engine is pretty good I think, my mates all bought the D4D 3L diesel engines and they are averaging around 10.5L/100km so yea I would go with the petrol.

Personaly I wouldn't spend 300K on a 5 year old vehicle though

I have been in the 3l D4D Fortuner, and personally I think it has a softer ride than my Astra 1.8 sport, by far! It sits very nicely on the road, very comfy. Have not been in a prado....

xrapidx - have a look...

there it is...unless i am reading it wrong?

and here is a prado - 2006 http://search.autotrader.co.za/www/cars_advert?id=201028186900006

You're going to pay a bit of a premium on the newer Fortuner as its still reactively new - that's quite high mileage for a 2009 though.

Actually, the Prado is also high mileage for its year - both my Honda and my Hilux have only done around 10,000km a year.

I personally don't mind an older vehicle as its already devaluated far enough from its new price, as long as its well kept, and reasonably low mileage.

If you like at the Prada, its only done
