Four men will each spend 32 years in jail for killing an off-duty policeman in Cape Town, it was reported on Thursday.

The Daily Voice reported that Xolile Mdini, 24, Siyabulelele Tsume, 24, Akhona Sikani, 24, and Wandile Mthendeni, 25, appeared in the Western Cape High Court on Wednesday for Constable Anele Latile's death.

Latile was shot dead while sitting in his car with friends outside his girlfriend's home in Delft, in March 2011.

Acting judge Nalini Gangen reportedly sentenced the men to 15 years each for robbery, eight years for two counts of attempted murder, five years for robbery with aggravating circumstances, and four years for illegal possession of firearms and ammunition.

They were also given life sentences for murder, but Gangen said these would run concurrently with the combined sentences for the other offences.

"The community is looking at the courts to protect its citizens," Gangen was quoted as saying.

"The deceased was an off-duty cop at the time. He was murdered and he was sitting with friends in his car.... Citizens should walk freely without the fear of being attacked."
