Four very affordable graphics tools

Nice article, makes for interesting reading for the layman... I guess anyone who is a design proffessional/semi-pro already knows this, but these articles are brilliant in my view :)

Nope. for graphics companies they are cheap stuff.

R6000 for a Software package is cheapstuff. really.

Ok, let me explain.

Cost of vinyl Cutter: R10 000, easily.
Cost of 1200mm Digital Printer: R100 000, easily.
Label Printer: R8000

now R6000 or so doesn't seem so much now, does it.

Even something as simple as a laser printer can cost thousands...

Yes you could go with Gimp, or inkscape - but i'm not so sure if the cheap/free apps support SUMMA Cutting Software...

Ok, Onyx Poster Shop is Software, which basically sends the PSD's/JPG's/EPS/etc to the huge-ass printers - it's not as simple as clicking on "print" in corel/photoshop, you need this extra software. this costs $2995.00

Wacom 23" Touchscreen: R44,000

If you really think about it, Photoshop & Corel are cheap!

I think you're missing the point.

Of course any company creating high quality work can afford the R6000, but most normal PC users using it once a month simply can't pay that much.

of course there are alternatives for people using it once a month - heck, you can even use paint!

....the article says there are cheaper alternatives to "high-end graphics production"
Sorry, but for "high-end graphics production" there ain't no alternatives other than "high-end software".

PS CS4 is not that expensive. It's R8,000 for the Standard version
and R10K for the Pro. Of course it IS expensive if you're fixing your photos
and doing hobby work/enthusiast stuff on it. If you earn money with it,
and hopefully reasonable money, it's not that expensive.

The Program "Color" in Final Cut Studio 2, used to cost USD $9,999 a couple years ago until Apple bought the company and now includes it in the $1,200
video editing suite - FCS 2. Shake was also very expensive, it's now $500 but it used to cost $5,000 until Apple bought it.

Peter, "fixing" photo's is not high-end graphics production.

EDIT: ah wait - i read your post again - I thought it was sarcasm the first time...lol

Haha! Well you know when you're fixing some archaic stuff - it becomes high end. Professional 19th century picture reconstruction is big business too.

However, no, I meant personal photographs of great grandma and her parents and so on from over a 100 years back and even stuff from the 40s.
It's not high end but then again programs like Shake and Color are High End programs and Hollywood uses these apps.

well, if Adobe charged R500 for photoshop, they would go out of business, and there wouldn't be a next version of photoshop :o

This goes for all high-end software. developers need to make a living too :D

Wow... Paint.NET completely left out ( http://www.getpaint.net/ )
Can open PhotoShop projects too which is great when you need an example of something. Can pull down PS file and use Paint.NET to study the "how".

I fully concure with this one. PAINT.NET v6.36 is WOW!! Been useing it for years don't need PhotoShop.

Keeper why you lying to these kind people.

Corel x4 and photoshop have released for free on torrents and news servers :p, this is for a very limited period of time so get your free software now!!!!!!

i'm sorry, but R4000 is insane money?

Have you ever used corel before? you could literally cover the cost of it in the first jobby or two!
