Fracking notice gazetted

At least it is a sensible move regarding the water-license. If it will be properly controlled, audited and managed is another issue and I somewhat think that those licenses will just be dished out without any due diligence. It is fascinating, that the government continues to go down the non-renewable energy route.

In Europe (for almost a decade now), house owners receive subsidies for photo-voltaic installations on their roofs and receive credits for electricity fed back into the grid. My father just installed it (at a cost of EUR 13,000) which covers 8 solar-panels, heat-exchanger etc - I would think that many people here would install a system like this if it was (like in Europe) tax-deductible, financeable at 0% and incentivised by receiving credits if you produce more than you consume.

The hydraulic fracturing/fracking results in chemicals being mixed with large quantities of water and sand and injected into gas-wells at extremely high pressure. It is known and has been proven many times, that fracking has resulted in polluted drinking water across the US. If you think mine-water pollution is bad, wait until fracking comes along.

^^^ 13k Euro's, is he able to power his whole house for that?

Need to chat to him as he had it installed a week or two ago. The way it works is as follows: The system produces electricity and feeds it directly into the energy network. You will receive EUR 4,80ct/kWh produced and obviously if you produce more than you consume, you will not pay for electricity but receive a refund. Depending on the sun exposure and the roof where you place the panels, a system can produce between 700kWh - 1200kWh. Just remember, that this is Europe (Austria) and I would think that during winter (snow on panels) it will probably produce nothing or very little.

I found the idea interesting, as it is not based on storing energy in battery banks (it's something you could do though), but it feeds it back into the electricity grid and the energy company then reduces energy production during the day. Most people overseas switch to those systems, as they accumulate credits over spring/summer and then offset those against the colder seasons (central heating). I think the worrying part is how far SA is behind on this - Eskom would be incapable of managing a concept like that.

At first I was not going to repost this, then I read the top comment someone had made

Please let this not be a general sentiment. :wtf:

Yeah we have real downies :(

Fek it, really.. are our government so hellbent on making profits through corrupt dealings that they will endanger what minimal water security we have as well as potentially completely destroying the Karoo?!?!?1

Our government, under the ANC is wholly corrupt. There is nothing they will not sell or exploit for personal profit. I also think they know their ship is sinking, so are trying to rape as much as possible before they are removed from office.

Some time ago there was a doccie about american fracking and one family's water was so contaminated that he could ignite the tapwater with a lighter.

Mbeki was easily baffled by the whole HIV/AIDS connection, and that was unintentional. I imagine a corrupt Zuma will lap up anything the Petro companies say.

Of course he will.. after they've paid for a few more extensions and additions to Nkandla.

Not one of the most balanced articles I've read.

The ' obstructionist activists ' may be over-alarming.

The ' good honest corporates ' are spinning like a top.

The truth is ... who knows.

But - IF something does go wrong and Karoo water is contaminated then what ? Do the corporates care, not a #$%^.

In addition to that we do not have a government that we can trust to contract with anyone with a financial motive.

They would be quite happy to sell-out the Karoo for another palace and fleet of Mercs.

They do, because if something goes wrong where it is implemented now they will get slapped with huge fines. All that is needed is proper legislation and proper implementation.

Can you trust anyone with to contract with anyone with a financial motive? I don't think so. Money corrupts. That does not mean we should not invest in projects.

Watched a documentary recently...... Gasland...... the one guy could ignite his tap water due to all the chemical pollutants from the fracking... great stuff.

The maker of that documentary has been called out for creative editing. One of things he elected to leave out was that people could also light their water before fracking.

you have been quiet. Did you write some exams, have you caught up on economics or do we need to bring DJ again?
I tend to get tired of a community that's tunnel visioned and biased - so I then move on to other forums and so on in a cyclical behaviour pattern.

I don't see what DJ has to do with this, but I'm sure he'll enjoy being obnoxious once more.
