The Free State Cheetahs have confirmed that Franco Smith has accepted their offer to coach the side during this season's Currie Cup.

The move sees incumbent Rory Duncan elevated to the role of Director of Rugby for the duration of the tournament after mentoring the side during last season's competition.

The union also reiterated that Cheetahs' Super Rugby coach, Naka Drotské and his support staff will remain within their roles for the remainder of the current Super Rugby season.

Furthermore, the Cheetahs have rebuffed speculation surrounding Drotské's future, stating that his contract only expires at the end of October 2016.

Smith led the Shimlas to their first Varsity Cup title, beating the NWU-Pukke in the final in April.

Seems there might be a new lease of life in the Cheetahs camp. At least APoc184 will be happy with this :)

I also feel it's time for change. The Cheetahs have all the right players but they have never gone anywhere.

Naka served them well but it was just not good enough. Let's hope there is change on the horizon.
