Free AV with Firewall

It's that time of the year again, decisions!

1. Upgrade Bitdefender for another year at R399
2. Get another AV/Firewall combo thats cheaper but is not a hog
3. Get a free package


Which is the best option, and which is the best free all in one? Running Win 7 64 bit.

Microsoft Security Essentials and your built in MS firewall

3rd party firewalls add little value these days and MSE is a really solid product (I've been using it on both 64 bit and 32 bit versions of Win 7) found it way more effective than AVG at trapping email borne payloads.
 
MSE or pay for a year ESS5. Both are top notch, but ESS5 has more diagnostic equipment. Worth the subscription IMO.
 
You can do just fine with free products.

For antivirus there's Avast and Avira which are both good and free, I've also heard good things about AVG Free, I no longer use Comodo products free or otherwise for a number of reasons.

For a firewall the best I've used by a good margin is Outpost Firewall which has a free version with a few missing features which you won't even miss unless you micromanage your connections.

A firewall I tried recently www.privatefirewall.com seemed solid enough but since I manage the connections in detail it felt lacking in the ease of use side, basically a solid firewall with a lacking front end, to me anyway.

Comodo firewall is solid enough with a few shortcomings on the interface side, at least that was the case about a year ago so I'm not sure if it's improved or declined since then as I don't use Comodo products anymore.

The built in Windows firewall is almost completely useless. Just listing it's shortcomings would make this post to long to read. Comparing the Windows built in firewall to good dedicated firewalls is like comparing a tomato box to a safety deposit box.
