How is this determined? Is it based on the area you're living in? At the previous flat that I was in, we would get it. I moved a couple of blocks down and I no longer get the free units.

Anyone understand how this works?

Also, previously, the electricity was supplied by the municipality and now it's by Eskom. Perhaps that's also a factor?

There's no such thing.

Every Rand someone gets that they didn't work for means that someone worked for a Rand that was taken from them.

I also used to get the free units, but it stopped after the recent price hike.

What are you on about?

The tenants in the previous block I was at are still getting it.

You only get the free units if you use less than a certain amount per month, they average this over 12 months.
The previous tenants were using more than this amount then. Just wait a few months and it should work itself out.

Didnt know about the 12 months, but i know its based on usage.

This depends on which bracket you are in. Not exactly sure, but the lowest bracket gets 50 free units. If you move up due to consumption, you no longer get that.

If you only use electricity for lighting, then you will quality for free units. The threshold has been systematically lowered so as to exclude most consumers

Ha ha ha. Because money is actual stuff that comes from money mines? For a philosopher you have a very poor grasp of concepts.

Perhaps I should have said the concept of concepts.

He is right. The one person's "free" units are not being given out of goodness by Eskom, the people who are paying have it built into their price.

I have been using less than 450 units for the past 6 months since installation of prepaid electricity at my flat. So I called City of Cape Town today and asked to be switched over from domestic user to lifeline user. This means I will be charged at cheaper rates and receive the free 50 units each month.

While the system exists; you must use it to your advantage. ;-)

Ah, so you have to request? Will give them a call. Thanks. Trying (and managing) to use under 80 units per month.

In my town everyone gets the 50 free units, but obviously only once per month.
