Free customizable Helpdesk/Issue tracking software

Currently we use excel to track issues and work we have to do.

Besides for creating my own software, (which I don't have time for), what open source/free software will have the following properties:
  • Access to a centralised database for all users on different machines
  • be able to add your own customized fields
  • draw reports on the data stored in the database
  • easy to use for the retards I work with

Basically, what I want is a customizable help desk or service desk software.
I can't use the one we currently have at work, as I can't customize it suit my needs, and we just need to use it within my department.

Any ideas?

I have found this http://www.ilient.com/, but it only has a free 30 day trial.

Hi,
We are using Google Apps and there is software in the marketplace called eStream Desk that does what you are looking for. I dont think that you need Google Apps though.

Spiceworks :) best out there and is totaly free

Personally found Spiceworks to be a bit of a resource hog on the machine I was running it on. There was also a spike in network traffic as there were constant interrogations. Also permissions on the network was an issue. It is a good IT management package though, not just a helpdesk tool.
