With all the free software out there these days, I was wondering if someone hasn't perhaps come across a free document management system that could be used for personal use.

As an engineer, I have collected several thousand documents, spreadsheets, journals and reports that I would like to be filed and indexed properly. Whilst they have been filed properly on a portable drive, it becomes difficult to find and I sometimes even forget that I have something, ending up searching aimlessly for hours as I cannot remember filenames etc.

Something that creates a "metadata" file/overlay that I can enter document properties, keywords and other relevant data to make indexing and finding these documents easier.

Cheers rudi

It looks interesting, but is it free?

Busy downloading it.

Yes, it is free. I think there is also a "Enterprise" version, that you need to pay for. Look at the community site for documents, additional plug-ins, etc.

if you happen to have a server environment (using windows server 2003) you can use windows sharepoint services version 3. its free and quite nifty. pity it can only be used on a server environment, otherwise I would use it at home... i'll check out nuxeo for home

Maybe not the greatest thing to use if you are archiving offline (ie. flash drive) but if not then I suggest google desktop. Quick easy and free.

Have been hooked up with WaggleSoft. Will start evaluating next week and will keep you up to date.

In the meanwhile thanks to everyone that gave ideas. Much appreciated!
