A good free antivirus package would be either Bitdefender free version:

The above only applies if you have one box and does not share your Internet device (modem, router etc) between two or more computers.
Of course, AVG Free, Zonealarm or Sygate is the best free software you can install and use.
If you're sharing your Internet connection, then you can also look at Smoothwall, an best-of-breed Internet firewall. The software itself is free, although you will need to install a dedicated PC for this firewall.
Dansguardian (an content filter) and ClamAV (antivirus) can be installed on Smoothwall, thus giving you better control over what sites can be blocked and ClamAV can block virus-infested downloads.

Apologies for dredging this old topic up
I have been using Avast Anti-virus for more than two years now.
A trojan was let through as well as a virus -both were found after doing a scan. This happened recently. The program updates automatically.
How is this program rated?
I have had ZoneAlarm for the same period and it appears to be working OK - I am not a fundi on these matters.

ZoneAlarm is a bit tricky to set up, granted. But once it's up and running it's tough to get another piece of software to rival it!
