Free virtual machine

VMWare server is free and runs on XP or Vista. Just use the get serial option. They give them away for free, all you need to do is fill in their form.

Why don't you just use MS Virtual PC? It's Free and you can resume with that, I think.

Edit:
Local Link - 32BIT Version

I run Vmware on both platforms. Dosgames dont work nicely on win95 in a vm environment if thats what you planning.

TIAL

You can also try Qemu - the package I'm using got a GUI frontend, so it's really easy to use.

I think the best thing to do is to keep to an open standard where you can transfer the image over to any OS of your choice - and AFAIK M$ virtual PC doesn't offer that.

VMware Server, you won't need another, unless you can get your paws on the workstation version.

+1 for Virtual Box from my side.

Runs every operating system I've thrown at it yet, and speed is pretty good. It's a little less polished than VMWare, but it's been recently purchased by Sun, so I don't think it will be going anywhere anytime soon.

Funny that Windows 95 wouldn't work

Why couldnt you install Win95?

Perhaps because you couldnt boot off the cd? Need to boot from 98 cd and start with cdrom support, pop in 95 and type setup.exe.

At least with Virtualbox you can connect USB devices.... which you can't do with MS Virtual PC.

Managed to get Win95 installed on a Qemu session :D

Laptop didn't have a stiffy drive.

I tried to boot up with a WinME CD, and then, after bootup, tried to swap the Win95CD in, but it does not work as WinXP moans and groans that the wrong CD is in the drive.

So another approach was called for.

So, what I did was to download a stiffy drive emulator from http://chitchat.at.infoseek.co.jp/vmware/vfd.html#download

Then I downloaded a Win98 boot stiffy image from http://www.shaneo.com/bootdisks/

After installing and setting up the virtual stiffy drive, I extracted the Win98 bootdisk to it.

And thereafter I instructed Qemu to boot from drive A: - which was virtualized.

And it worked. :D

Here's proof :

MS Virtual PC 2007 is free - runs most OS's including Linux & OS2
Tried VMWare, but much too hungry on resources.

Can concur with that - was able to get OS/2 and Win2000 up and running in M$ Virtual PC, but Win2000 won't work under Qemu for some obscure reason - the problem I get is that it runs out of disk space, even when I allocate 10Gb's or larger.

Bah.

Am planning to install win98se, winME :sick:, winNT4.

just get VMware from torrents, if you arent going to use it for commercial purposes. Please dont give me that piracy k@k we all have our bigboy pants on here.
