"Free" Vodacom Internet!

You mean the Open Systems Interconnection Reference Model? ;) Pity Vodacom didn't follow such a tried and tested example of modularity in implementing their prepaid system then we wouldn't still be waiting for ppdbs. Still seems puzzling that it can take over a year and a half to rewrite the software to duduct money from your airtime balance when you buy a bungle and then deduct the data usage from your bungle balance when you use it.

Don't feel like dwelling on the Vodacom subject though. Vodacom says there's no secret rooms where secret people have secret meetings to decide how to scr*w subscribers for more profit. Well, their own tariff rates were a prime example of this. You don't like your standard rate then go over to the smartstep option to pay cheaper rates after the first minute. But, oh wait, if you make a call during off-peak you get charged the same rate which if higher than the standard rate so not a good option if you make calls mostly during off-peak. Choose the per second plan which was sold to millions of unsuspecting people through a 4U plan. But, oh wait, I forgot for a moment that if I make 90% of calls during peak like most people probably do I would be paying R3.60 per minute for something which should come as standard anyway. And we can still have a conversation here that Vodacom does not try to screw people by obscuring the charges you would be paying.

But I don't want to talk about that as we all know this already and Vodacom can't prove otherwise. The goats are still running around though. Connected through different settings today and got charged for data sent and received like expected. What was unexpected though if that I was also charged for sent data only and for received data only on two different occasions. Don't know if it was the settings or just an anomaly. Have a bit of airtime to play with in small increments this time.

Vlive internet

Im on a family topup contract. While this morning i went on the internet and i paying for surfing the web via my nokia 6680 i really dont mind for paying ,but then vc must get there act right with ppdb and sort it out now.I enjoyed my free internet for the last 3 days.

Looks like vodacom wont get their together.everyone says the VLIVE portal is free but it isnt ! I am paying for browsing vlives homepage.vodacom makes enough income through sms, calls, video calling, etc thats why they can sponsor soccer and rugby, but they cant even give us free browsing even on vlive ! Whats up with vodacom ! I want my free browsing on vlive !

I am a virgin user, but after reding bout people being charged for vlive, i tried it out.

My balance R1012.31
First i inserted my sim card into my sony ericsson k700i with the vlive settings, (sim has been activated for vlive) played a few seconds, checked my balance,

My balance R1011.13 Was less than 2 minutes***

Now i inserted my sim card into my vodafone branded sony ericsson v600i, played around on the vlive site, even streamed the free video demo chanel, checked my balance,

My balance is R1011.13

Thus i came to the conclusion that the vodafone live site is only free to browse if you are using the vlive settings, AND you are using a branded vodafone phone.

*** I came to another conclusion that the vlive site is waay expensive to browse , as it cost me R1.18 for little more than a minutes browsing.

I am glad to be in virgin mobile

Doesn't happen here. Even when browsing it on the pc.

How would they know if the phone you are using has been branded or not? I think it's a setting on your phone causing it to use the internet apn instead. Make sure that the vlive apn is the default for your phone's browser and check which apn is in use while you're connected.

i deleted all my profiles on the sony k700i, and only recreated the vlive connection settings.

Might be a glitch tho, and might not, its easy to detect phone type and software over a web connection.

Jip...just try *111# ,settings, and let VC detect you phone. You'll be amazed at how it works sometimes, and sometimes not. Also,if you visit my website(or any website for that matter), my logs clearly shows what 'browser' was used to view the pages. And that browser is always like 'Samsung SGH-E860 MobileBrowser v1.3', IOW a dead giveaway of your phone model/make.

Yes but, there are hundreds of Nokia 6680 phones e.g. which are not branded. Will Vodacom let all of them have vlive, but not let other people with non-vlive phones have it as well? Besides, you can access it for free on a pc connection and only pay when going on-net. Seems like it must be a glitch either on the phone or by Vodacom.

On my site i set it to show the following:
Details: Browser: SonyEricssonV600i/R2K Browser/SEMC-Browser/4.2 Pro and ip: 196.38.218.34
it clearly shows the phone make and model as welll as the software version.
May be that all v600 is branded, as the k600 is the unbranded version, i will do more research into this unless vodacom3G can give us a clear answer

Free net access Yeah!!!

Vodafone Live! is an entertainment / news / sales portal for Vodafone, you can surf the Vodafone Live portal for free on your phone but as soon as you surf anything else you get charged for the data. If you have not got a Vodafone Live! cellphone you can just point your browser to live.vodafone.com - vodacom users can browse this for free.

Dunno if anyone will read this but I bought a Vodalive branded Handest on a pre-paid in Nov last year. The sales consultant spent about an hour tellling me that i could get access to all manner of luverly goodies on the internet which I promptly did. After about 3 months I noticed that I could still access the internet and thought it strange. (Now I had not been browsing only in the Vodalive portal but everywhere!!) I checked my airtime and lo and beholdeth it was stil at 25 buckaroos. From time to time I have accessed the net through this handset but about a month ago I noticed it had started deducting airtime from the prepaid account. Is this what you are all on about in this thread?

I lost you.
Do you mean if the data moves faster than 3KB/s it should be charged, or if the file/website is larger than 3KB it should be charged for?
Both would be pathetic/useless. First instance, just keep my speed below 3KB/s.
Second, well...guess what. There are almost NO websites out there that are below 3KB in size. Maybe some WAP sites, but they are also in the small numbers.
What are you trying to say?

Hey there but VLIFE is not free any more paying the same rate as mtn,.
It hapend last month. :-(
Sorry but thats what my wap friends tell me now they dont that that often any more.

Hope you have a great day

Yup, but it didn't stay with phones and moved on to the pc as well and that is why it is such a heated issue since Vodacom didn't make any mention that it was no longer free. It was nice to have had some payback though while it lasted.

Now taht doesn't make any sense at all. Most webpages including the vlive pages are more than 3kb in size. It was the case that large downloads didn't go through which made it pretty much useless for most downloads, but it appeared to be tied to the capabilities of the proxy and there was never a fixed size limit. Sure Vodacom can introduce an element size limit of say 500k, not many pages over that size, but we can still get around that by using proxy chains that can handle byte serving.

Btw. The MTN goat is dead as well. It gives an access denied error, although not as amusing as Virgin's. And so is Vodacom's mms. On a side note, does anybody know of a program that can be used to set up a proxy chain using any proxy.

I dont see any use for vodafone in south africa anymore.everyone i know purchased vodafone because of the free browsing ,and since vodacom is interested in making as much money as they can from everything they offer, even vodafone,i dont see vodafone lasting long in south africa. its no use having vlive.vodacom sure is promoting vodafone.

Vodafone Live ! Should change their name to Vodafone Dead ! Thats whats going to happen soon.vodacom gprs cost are the worst ! They wont even connect you to the net if have .80 cents remaining, while with mtn you can browse till the last cent.vodafone dead ! Vodacom going to be dead ! Lol.i want my free vlive browsing back !

With Virgin too it seems and then it just goes dead when you reach zero, but you can still connect on a zero balance and use up everything that gets added to your account later.

Whoever is using vlives portal for downloads such as games, music, etc are crazy.the prices are ridiculous ! Why cant they lower costs ? Why cant vodacom lower their gprs costs ? Why ? Whats so hard.its not like they are taking over the world and they need to overcharge everyone !
