Free wireless networks gain momentum

Just to add something, on the services offered.. we are looking into providing a mirror of Wikipedia (Wikipedia dump) on PTAWUG. That means, free and fast access to all the information on Wikipedia as the files will be stored and served locally. Perhaps a little out of date but that's fine. This is just one example of many WUG services that are possible when you put some thought into it.

Warning: the file enwiki-20080103-pages-meta-history.xml.7z decompresses to 2.8 Terabytes wow unless you do a
sample of the dump
Get someone with a 100Mb/s or 1 Gb/s connection in Europe to dowload the file and copy to a hard drive to ship to SA

Actually a usable mirror is around 100GB (5-15GB download). I'm still trying to figure out how to make it work though... I'll be at the MyBroadband conference. As will a few other wuggers if anyone has any questions (I'm sure Xarion will be there again as well for the JAWUG queries). Perhaps we can have a chat if anyone has any suggestions/advice/experience on how to get a Wikipedia mirror going

This gives some idea of the process: http://modzer0.cs.uaf.edu/~dev2c/wiki/How_to_mirror_Wikipedia

Actually what would make a lot of sense is to use a caching proxy server that downloads or updates the content for a few selected sites.
wikipedia
news24
weather24
mybroadband
etc.

However at what point would this break the law? I mean a mirror or cache of a website could also be deemed as providing an Internet service even if the data is outdated.
Could be a slippery slope ...

The isssue is whether or not it is being provided as a commercial service. If you are happy to supply the bandwidth required to mirror the content and then share it with the members of the wug at no charge then there isn't any issue :)

Thanks for the links, we are busy downloading the database as I am typing this post. CTWUG will soon have a wikipedia mirror now.

Actually we are already providing reverse proxies to a limited number of sites (including those you mention) free of charge. In fact, a number of wuggers access MyBB via this method. This is most definitely not a commercial service and just experimental.. again, something that we are trying out. The WUG is an ideal platform for experimenting like this :D
