This stealthy drive stores plenty of data, perfect for portable storage or a backup drive.

External drives have a multitude of uses. Traditionally, they have most often been used either to carry out backups, or to more conveniently transport data between locations. In today’s technology landscape, other uses are becoming increasingly popular, particularly for high-capacity drives as ways to store media, especially video, in the digital home.

Given the increasing availability and affordability of 2.5-inch external drives, which are powered by the USB port, 3.5-inch drives, like this one, are becoming less popular for portability, because of the extra hassle of carrying and connecting an external AC adapter.

As a result, the role of such drives is becoming more defined: they are semi-permanent storage devices that can be moved if necessary, but mostly remain static. This particular drive has an appealing low-profile matte-black finish, and connects via micro-USB. It can be connected directly to a PC, or to a network attached drive that supports USB auxiliary drives. Unfortunately, the USB cable provided is quite short.

The drive also doesn’t support very large files of several gigabytes in size, but otherwise performs just fine. It is ultra quiet – in fact (and also because it has no indicator lights), you basically need to touch it to feel for warmth or vibration to determine whether it is plugged in.
