I'm looking for a freelance developer who can work on one or many side-projects for me. For the right person, the role could migrate to full-time, permanent in time and could involve equity in various ventures.
This role would suit either an experienced developer with spare time who wants to make a bit of money and experiment on the side or a junior, but professional developer not wanting to go down the traditional route.
An example candidate would be a self-starter who knows PHP and MySQL well, and programs with some level of professionalism. Corporate experience is not necessary, but you do need to take pride in your work and understand the principals of designing good, maintainable software - e.g. knowledge and experience working with Design Patterns would be highly beneficial.
All of the following skills are nice-to-have, the main point is that you must be able to take requirements and guidance and produce a working product, using existing tools and without trying to re-invent the wheel:
- Back-end Server-Side Scripting - your preference as long as it's free e.g. PHP, Perl, Python -- preferably you'd naturally take OOP route to solving problems
- Database: SQL - be that mysql, postgres or the modern ones mungodb or even nosql
- HTML, CSS and/or Bootstrap or any of your own preferred frameworks (cakePHP, joomla, wordpress included, assuming you can get them to do what you want, not just posting content)
- Cloud-server implementation (optional) - e.g. experience integrating a website-with-database on Amazon EC2 or heroku.
- Simple app development (optional)
- Some familiarity with Microsoft Excel may be beneficial...
- The ability to learn and read documentation - so that you're comfortable experience integrating with third-party APIs - e.g. payfast, uber etc.
The role would not initially be full-time and could potentially be fitted around other work/jobs (assuming your employment contract allows this!); however it could migrate to full-time permanent position for the right person. We'd be happy working remotely, although some preference will be given to people able to meet-up occassionally in Cape Town.
In order to apply please tell me how much you'd like to paid per hour of work* and if you have examples of a portfolio of previous work, please send it through. Also, if you feel you have relevant experience related to any of the projects below, please tell us in your message.
We have a number of small and large projects we need help with. Here's some examples:
1. Capturing charitable donations from various foundations (bit of web-scraping, plus a bit of manual labour!)
2. Automated analysis of data (key skills here will be effectively translating what someone has done in Excel into SQL & PHP (or Perl, or Python or whatever you prefer!) and then cron-jobbing that analysis)
3. Capturing and Processing exchange rate data to help people make purchasing decisions quicker (some scraping, some API calls, possibly some 'app' development)
4. Recording payments between friends - splitting bills etc. (e.g. bootstrap front end with form, capturing them presenting that data back to people)
5. Cron-job to monitor and store an API stream for later analysis
6. Tracking and storing phone data, initially possibly captured using USSD codes from the phone, but then input into a database for further comparison.
I'd be happy to hear from freelancers, interns and even small teams. We may ask you to sign an NC/NDA (non-compete, non-disclosure agreement) before starting work, but not during the application stages.
*-if you'd prefer to be paid in a different way, e.g. fixed price per 'project', then please give us some kind of indication for a 'small' project you've done in the past and the price of that.
