Good morning

Does anyone have experience with either of the above ?

I’ve heard from some that you have to pay to get work from freelancer specifically ?

Would like to explore the option if it’s worth it

Are you looking to use them for their services or to offer your services on there?

I use both as a client, and from my conversations with the hires there's a 20% fee plus another small fee, and the money only gets to them in 10 days or there about.

Thanks for the reply. I’m looking to offer my services. Currently working from home to keep busy, on a project base (as needed)

I am in management consulting. I will be happy if the fee is only there on successful jobs/payment

I believe the fee is only on payment, what many guys do is push up their prices to compensate for the 20% fee. I've currently got around $5k in pending contacts there at the moment, and that 20% hurts but it's the price I pay to not get screwed by an contractor.

Having used both I prefer Upwork, the offering is of a higher standard overall. Just keep in mind that you'll need to be able to receive your money, I'm not sure what banking / payment options they have for freelancers.

Once again this is my exp from a client side, I'm sure there are some on mybb who offer their services and can give a clearer picture.

I say go for it, you've got nothing to lose in making a profile and showcasing your work etc.

Paypal.

I've also been on both sides. Selling my services and hiring contractors to help me out when I get stuck.

You get your money via Paypal. I never bothered bringing my cash back to SA. Instead I'd buy some kak from eBay or Amazon instead.

That sounds good, thank you very much for the input. Will definitely explore Upwork especially

I will create a PayPal profile. Any specific reason you haven’t brought the money back to SA ?

There is some stuff I’d like to buy from Amazon though. So might keep some in USD for that.

I was just lazy, that's all. Plus I used to buy things from Amazon or eBaay almost every month anyway.

In the event you want to bring cash back quickly and painlessly, @The_Traveller buys USD and will pay you in randelas. I can vouch for him as I've dealt with him numerous times. You just send the USD to his Paypal account and he EFT's you ZAR to your bank account.

Picked up some work on Upwork, it's a struggle you are competing against people who work for next to nothing. You need to have a presence everywhere to keep yourself busy and earning

That makes sense, if I buy some stuff in the US I will do the same.

Thank you, I appreciate it. Will definitely speak with him when I bring money this side

Thanks for the advice.

Instead of starting a new thread … my partner has been embroiled in a fraudulent matter with upwork where her credit card was used to purchase freelance services. The weirdest thing is her old card was cancelled and a new one issued and today that new card was used to fraudulently purchase this service again. R15k taken the first time around (last week) and today again another a r15k

It perplexes me how this was even possible. No controls like otp to verify such purchases. And neither of us are even registered with upwork. Anyone experience anything similar … I’m really trying to figure out how this particular fraud is happening

I know this is a slight derail. But also a flaw on upworks kyc processes

I was on Freelancer, although I used it to connect with Filipinos and find clients and then continue the conversation away from the platform. I never built my reputation on there ,although that should be your aim if that is what you will rely on long term. You should be very strict in what you deliver and make sure you work in stages and paid at end of each stage before you release the work.

My current business partner I met on Freelancer some many years ago.

On Freelancer my rate started at around 15$ an hour and in 2019 it was around 35$ an hour. But for me it wasn't a main source of income.

I think Upwork is probably the best for freelancers, it takes a while to get work though but once you start getting work its much easier.
