Hi guys!

After driving my little jazz on a dirt road for the last time (just not built for it), I am about to buy a Freelander 2. There are a lot of mixed opinions out there about the reliability, but as far as I have found: Everyone who has one, loves it and everyone who hasn't says it is rubbish.

Would love to hear what you guys think.

Well if you decide to get one then please make sure it has the heated rear window option...

My neighbor had one. Had it for a month. Broke down 5 times. He sold it back to the dealer.
Make sure you don't buy that one.

How old is it? When they get older and things start to break you are going to cry. Not cheap to maintain and not extremely reliable, especially as they get older.

Freelander 2 as a car is fine, more than that actually. Pretty awesome offroad capabilities and pretty luxurious if specced correctly. However, even die hard fans will admit to reliability issues.

AA membership and befriending your local mechanic are recommended if you purchase.:)

Seriously though, for the same price as an oldish Freelander 2 you can get a low mileage IX35 or similar. Dirt roads and such should be a breeze without the worry of imminent breakdown...

A golf has roughly the same ground clearance as an IX35, no?

People confuse the FL2 with the FL1. The FL1 was very unreliable and caused big headaches. The FL2 is very reliable and very underated actually.

I am looking at a 2010 with 180000km, R130 000. Milieage is high but seems to be in a really good condition.

Two of my friends used to own Freelander 2's and they used to talk only good things about them. Though, after they sold them they only talk more of the cons and bad times they had with them.
If it must be a SUV, get a CRV.

Unless you are good with fixing cars or know a good mechanic that can help you out, stay way. With such high kilos things are going to start to break, if they have not already.

+1, especially diesel at that kilos will probably have worn glow plugs etc.

How bad can it be? I don't know but that's not what I want to ask myself when buying anything.

This, the FL1 was a turd, the FL2 was much better in every way (especially reliability). That being said have you looked at any other competitors? Subaru Forester, Honda CRV etc?

I have a FL2, very reliable and very capable off-road, 215mm clearance, which can easily be lifted by 40mm with the right tyres and possibly a few spacers, front and rear.

My engine is the very reliable 2.2l 140kw (400Nm) Peugeot SD4, and it has a Jatco 6-sp auto gearbox.

I have found it to be reliable and economical.

Great sound system, with sub.

I looked at a number of alternatives before I bough it, the only vehicle in the same class that comes close is the Subaru Forester.

For various reasons, including that the Subaru was not available in diesel at the time, I bought the FL2.

Some people say that the FL1 facelift was also good, that the problems were resolved with the facelift.

I don't really know, never had one of those.
