Freelander II - thoughts advice please.

Thanks Sensorei. I have heared a lot of positive things about the car, a few niggly things people would change, but overall seems to get a lot of praise.

Looking forward to taking this baby down to the coast.
 
I bought a 2nd hand FL2 in Jan 2009 with 35000km on the clock for R300 000. I STILL love it. Powerful turbo diesel, currently doing 8.7l/100km mixed cycle. Yes parts can be expensive out of warranty, but you can shop around. For instance: I cracked my rear light cluster. Landrover parts shop quoted R2000 for the part and R1000 labour. I took the part number, searched for it on EBay....R650 brand new including shipping. Found a YouTube video to fit it.

I love cars, and I've followed the soft roaders on car mags. All I can say is that ill most likely be forking out a bit more to get me another FL.

I test drove the Evoque last year. The drive wasn't any better than the FL2 and its expensive....R650 000 and there were no 2nd hand ones at the times. Most drivers seem to be women drivers, so its more of a fashion statement ..a bit like the Z4. ;-)

Well I look forward to joining your club. I took it out on the highway to see if there was any cabin noise and I was very impressed, it was pretty quiet despite some negative reviews on this.

I was also pleased to learn that it has the SD4 engine and not the TD4, not that the TD4 isn't a already amazing engine, but the extra 30 or so KW is nice.

I have used and will use ebay to source parts if I really want to keep it that long, but I can see I have fallen in love with this machine already, so I may not want to let it go.

Interesting regarding the Evoque - Did you know that it has the same chassis as well as the same engine as the Freelander 2. NOW doesn't the Evoque seem even more over priced now? It is a piece of driving art. Awesome look at, beautiful lines etc, but at the end of the day, its a Freelander in fancy clothing.
 
I use Dover Parts (011-493 6717) in Shelby for new parts.

And welcome to the Land Rover Family! :D

True story, the FL1 was an absolute disaster. It was only ever a question of when it would have problems, not if it would have problems.

Yup, the Evoque is simply a model on top of the FL2 with a different shell.

The SD4 is a great engine. It gets used by a variety of vehicles... Tata, Ford, Jaguar, Rover and one or two others, I forget. Each manufacturer tunes/modifies the engine slightly, to their liking.

it wasn't that bad, only the petrol and the first ones to come out of the Rosslyn plant. Plenty of the TD4s still running around with high mileage without major issues.

Yep, and if you close your eyes when you drive the Evoque offroad, you cannot tell the difference between it and the FL2 ;)

So that will be pretty much all the time, so you don't see your R700k+ vehicle getting scratched to hell and back :p
 
As nice as the interior on the evoque is, its is ridiculously over priced.
 
swap keys often!
Those keys recharge in the ignition and you are in for a world of pain if one completely dies.
Something a mate of mine told me after finding out the hard way.
 
Picked up my landy this morning at 8 sharp. Absolutely love this vehicle!

A few things to remember about driving a TDi:

1. When cold, start the car, let it idle for 30s and then drive off gently (do not rev it).
2. Once it's warmed up (10km), you can start driving it like you stole it
3. When you get to your destination, slow down for the last couple of km to allow turbo to cool down - never just switch off after a hard run!
4. Chuck in a bottle of Wynns diesel cleaner every 5000km or so
5. Join a Landy club for fun outings :)

Except the diesel bit. Don't chuck diesel fluids into a petrol car :p

Shot for the tips. I used to own a golf Tdi and treated her relatively well.

I was there at Matroosberg on Saturday - Freelander 2 - but could not get past the one bend - steep up hill - with a turn to right, and then a nice step. Tried twice, but was burning the clutch & tyres a bit - so gave up. Maybe with a bit of lift and better tyres you can do it. I also need bit more practice with the FL2, and time to play with the different settings. Just for the record - behind me as a Disco 2 V8 that tried about 5 or 6 times - gave up and then tried later again and made it. Feeling a litter bit better:D
