Freeware GPS with voice

Then you have to source the overseas map. Have not seen anywhere where you can get a world map to save on your device.

NavFree has maps for many countries, most are free downloads.

Android

iOS needs to be searched by country, eg UK

USA

Potential users remember that you use data when downloading. Someone once complained when they found out that they use data for YouTube videos.

Dave123, some people are ignorant. Need to try NavFree as well. Have been using Waze so far.

To clarify, yes, to download the map can cost data, but that can be done on a wifi connection at home/work, NavFree it is a one off download to the phone and it is then stored on the phone for future use, it is a free app and maps are free, as in, there is no purchase price for the app or maps, and all usage can be done off line.

I haven't used Waze for a while, it was always a data required app where you require a data link to be running all the time the app is running (the phone has to be on line to use it). Has that changed then?

Reason why I use Waze is for traffic updates. My TomTom GPS battery went dead and at R900 for replacement, I didn't think it was worth it.

+1 for Waze.

So far I have a 100% success rate with this app.

It just works. Hard to believe its actually free.

Must be perfectly honest, but NavFree is pretty mediocre. They don't even use the current OSM maps. I can find no way to get to the nuts and bolts settings for something as simple as changing the voice. The navigation makes me feel as though I'm in Navigon.

Yes, there are better off line Satnav options, but none are free. I much prefer TomTom (or even co-Pilot) as an option that is much better, but it isn't free.

I'm presuming that is a US only update at present, I'm not getting any Maps update on my phone.

You'll get it in the next couple of days. All app updates are rolled out over a period of time.

LOL @Google

I received the maps update on my iPad and iPhone 5s this morning, still no update on my HTC One running 4.4.2.

Nothing like Google helping the competition before their own Android customers...

It's just random, next time you might receive it on Android first.

Also, I really think Google value both the Apple and Android ecosystem. They're not out to put Apple users at a disadvantage. They make money of everyone using their services in one way or another.

Been trying NavFree a bit more, and the maps are definitely dated. There is a gated neighbourhood pretty close to me (been closed for more than 15 years) and NavFree tried to take me through it last nite.

BTW, OsmAnd is also free, but not very easy to use (or at least it wasn't when I tried it):
