Did you change your SATA mode at any stage in your bios?
Have you managed to find a solution by now? I am very much interested to hear what the problem was.
Make and model? Firmware version?
So it's not seen by the BIOS?
I think it might be time for a warranty claim.
I'd do what you did to get it working and then copy of the email files off first thing and then replace the drive. If you want, you could plug the drive into another working pc and see if you could get it alive again, but I wouldn't want to use a faulty drive as my primary drive - too much frustration waiting to happen.
