Hey guys, I'm stuck and my ex computer repair guy is a complete moron. Whenever I turn on my pc it works for a bit, then it gets stuck when I try open a folder. I did drop it down the stairs LOL so I'm sure that has something to do with it.
Well, I took it to this guy and he said there was nothing wrong with it and he still charged me. I haven't paid him yet. Anyone now what the problem is or if you know of a good repair shop in either joburg or PTA?
He also told me I had DDR2 800mhz ram. I checked and it's only 600mhz. That will def teach me not to trust. I'll double check next time.
Thanks

possibly took out the CPU fan and you're overheating? though any tech person with half a brain would have checked that first. Next step is to unplug as much RAM as possible and try.

He propably overclocked your CPU and now your CPU fan is not stong enough to cool the thing down. So it freezes. Does this only happen when you open folders or does it just happen randomly? If it happens randomly then my theory may be correct. If it's only when you open folders then it could be a virus or trojan freezing up the PC or an invalid registry entry.

Im reckoning it must overheating. Not too sure how to fix it. I'll get one of the dudes from work to hopefully take a look at it. Any other ideas?

Dude. Get Coretemp and see what the temps are.. If it runs for a bit at least you can have a look.
If the temps are fine then it should not be your cpu :)
Maybe your HardDrive is gone. Usually when your PC overheats you get A BSOD... Im not an expert but thats what I would think anyways. Perhaps im wrong though :(

If you are in the Midrand region, I can have a look for you... I won't charge, only for parts replaced. :D

Can't see the core temp. It's just not there. I'm pretty sure it's the hard drive though. When it freezes, it remains stuck for a few minutes then resumes, then gets stuck and so on. Sometimes it doesn't freeze though.

New hard drive or reformat?

Eish, R500 goes poof* then. I opened the machine. I can hear the hard drive struggling. I wanted to get more ram and a good wireless keyboard and mouse. Guess that will have to wait. Me and my clumsiness and laziness. If I spent an extra 2 seconds removing all the cables like a normal person I wouldn't have bailed.

Ps: safari for the iPhone is truly dumb.

Thanks for the help so far. I'll take you up on that offer sharkbait if no one else closer to home can help.

Take out the drive and place it into another pc and do a surface scan.

U probably damaged an area on the drive making it unreadable.

A scan will tell windows not to try read that area so it wont freeze up whenever trying to access that specific sector.

I dropped my mate's hdd and fixed it for him that way...still working after 2 years :p

Yip, it is a seagate and I've had it for ages. Why do you ask? I was thinking of getting a 500gb seagate as a replacement

Well, your drive is not faulty by default :) Because of this whole Seagate turmoil with the recent firmware issues, I'm going to keep a safe distance from them in the nearby future :p
Good luck!

try full format not quick.
just a thought, process of elimination?

All he is missing in the "buy a new one" part :D

Whatever you do, DON'T go and buy a new Segate to replace it, you are just asking for k@k.

If you are going to buy a new drive get a WD or Samsung or anything but Seagate.

Sounds to me like it could be a software problem, possible virus, trojan. That would be my initial guess.
