Whatever you do, DON'T go and buy a new Segate to replace it, you are just asking for k@k.

If you are going to buy a new drive get a WD or Samsung or anything but Seagate.

Sounds to me like it could be a software problem, possible virus, trojan. That would be my initial guess.

bought myself one recently with no hassles thus far. however i did check firmware first just to be sure.

Ja, Ill look at the firmware before I buy. Sheesh...It could really be so many things. Im over this problem. Ive narrowed it down to 2 things...either a trojan/virus or a pooped hard drive with bad sectors. If it was a virus, would it be possible that it unfreezes because thats what it does.
