Had a strange problem on Saturday. Netgear DG834G v3 connected at 4096/384 but LCP not allowed to come up. No Internet at all.
Placed call on 0800375375, reported problem, put thu to 10215 to check Telkom ISP. Was told that three sessions were connected. Consultant terminated the three sessions, then I was able to connect to internet.
Has anyone any idea as to what caused this problem?
Apparently sessions were supposed to time out but didn't.
I reported the synch loss and the LCP downs at ±12:00 today, and checked on the number of sessions that I could have at any one time.
My Telkom ISP account was set to 2 sessions.
The strange problem on Saturday was probably caused by three of my home PCs going onto the Internet, and because the Telkom system was probably not programmed to handle 3 sessions when set for 2, the system then malfunctioned and did not time the sessions out as it should have after the requisite period of inactivity was reached. Consequently, next morning, I was blocked from connecting to the Internet because 3 sessions were still active. Once the 3 sessions were terminated by the consultant, I was able to connect to the Internet.
I had the number of sessions increased to 4 today, the maximum allowed with the 3 Gig shaped account.
I have not lost synch nor dropped LCP since then.
It appears that there are a few details that we should be aware of when using ADSL and Telkom ISP.
Using iBurst with up to 5 PCs connected, I never encountered this problem because I had set up Internet Connection Sharing where all PCs shared the one session.
Using the Netgear modem router and a hub, each PC sets up its own session.
We must now be careful not to exceed the 4 sessions allowed. This gets a bit tricky because it has been very convenient to leave all PCs connected for auto updating of Windows and anti-virus systems. I must now leave one of my 5 machines off-line.
