Reduced Connect Speed
Hey Mzi, could it not be that your line is too far from the exchange and that the noise and attentuation or whatever they going on about is too high for 4mbps. Has your line done this since installation or is it a recent problem that wasn't a problem before like with me?
I know people have had problems and had to have their speeds taken down from 4mbps to something a bit slower until they found a quality level.
Thanks for that. I found this in one of the threads which shows that my download measurements are marginal.
6dB or below is bad and will experience no synch or intermittent synch problems
7dB-10dB is fair but does not leave much room for variances in conditions
My download 8 db
11dB-20dB is good with little or no synch problems
My upload 12 db
20dB-28dB is excellent
29dB or above is outstanding
My upload is 15.5 db
20dB and below is outstanding
20dB-30dB is excellent
30dB-40dB is very good
40dB-50dB is good
50dB-60dB is poor and may experience connectivity issues
My download is 52db
60dB or above is bad and will experience connectivity issues
Randburg exchange.
After much haggling, Sybil on 0800 375 375, got hold of a colleague in "Testing" and had my connect speed set to what I requested - 3072/384.
It now remains to be seen whether this will reduce the loss of synchronization and LCP drops. If it does, then I will try to have the connect speed increased by 128kbps at a time until such time as the bad symptoms reappear.
My connect settings of 3072/384 have now been in place for 1 hour 12 minutes and there have not been any losses of synchronization or LCP downs.
Perhaps my Telkom reticulation leaves a lot to be desired.
Some time back, one of the techies came to check connections on the pole where 4 properties join. He said that there were too many wires to fit in the box, so he let the box hang in limbo and borrowed a plastic shopping bag to cover the wires connected there which led to the 4 houses concerned.
With the passage of time, the plastic bag biodegraded and blew away, the rains came and the creepers grew and entertwined themselves with the connections.
As expected, numerous calls to Telkom regarding the hazards posed by the inseperable combination of Telkom's and mother nature's resources, with liberal quanties of rain and hail, yielded no positive response.
The inevitable happened - we lost telephonic contact with the outside world.
I then compiled a message expressing my dissatisfaction with Telkom's response to my complaints and sent it every 20 seconds to the Telkom.co.za webmaster.
He responded by getting the message to the right people which brought out the first team.
Armed with suitable tools, the creepers were demolished, the wires tamed, and the box replaced. The service was restored!!
It may now be apparent that my last 40 metres leaves a lot to be desired.
It is not surprising that my connection cannot sustain a reliable 4096 download.
