My connections drops every few minutes to even seconds when I am NOT using the phone line. While calling on the line, such as waiting for the Helpdesk to respond, no drops occur. There is no line noise I can perceive and the problem is getting worse. Why would it not drop if using the phone but cannot stay connected otherwise. It is not a time-out / keep alive problem a far as I can detect. Both Zyzel 2602 and my Microcomm modem does the same. 4Mbps line.

Can you post your linestats? Look around on the Zyxel menus for Web configurator or diagnostics etc. Post your downstream and upstream noise margins and attenuations and somebody should be able to help you further. It sounds as though your downstream noise margin is very close to 6dB. If you reduce your linespeed to 2 or 3Mbps this should fix the problem as this should increase the downstream noise margin. You could also try to monitor the variation in the noise margin of your line both on and off hook using routerstats. When you take the telephone off hook this might change the line impedance sufficiently to keep the connection stable. Another measure that you could try is to connect a 100nF 600V capacitor across the two wires to try to simulate the effect of the off hook telephone. This often helps to reduce noise in the case of poorly balanced lines.
