So we have been using Fresh earth gluten free flour (and a few other products) for a while due to my daughter having coeliac disease. They have now changed their packaging to say that their flour may contain gluten, despite clearly for years and still stating on the front that it is gluten free. Highly disappointed in them and this will lower my trust towards anything they make. In fact from being one of their most loyal customers they just lost all of my business.

For people like Coeliacs if you say you are gluten free and then are not it can cause a lot of harm.

Seriously, you had one job fresh earth, well done on failing utterly at it.

WTF. If it may contain gluten, they should remove the gluten free label.

I would say be in contact with them, they are very accommodating.
Also Gluten free doesn't mean 100% gluten free, gluten comes from many sources and so it is very possible for trace amounts to still be present.

A quick Google search shows that gluten may be present in Gluten free products. One doctor's article mentioned 0.02% is acceptable. You decide.

And yes Gluten is a challenge in my life and kids (medically confirmed)

Sucks that you need to specify this after all the hipsters and every second person is suddenly allergic to gluten.

The only benefit that has done is those that have coelic disease now have more choices.

Unfortunately cross contamination is possible from the time the seed is planted right through the whole process. Its impossible for any company to claim that any grain is 100% gluten free.

Have you tried sour dough options?

There has been some research to suggest that it's not the gluten itself causing the problem but rather the way it's unnaturally fermented from artificial or instant yeast starters.

This doesn't happen with sour dough and although there is gluten in doesn't have the same end result.

With my Crohn's disease it certainly makes a difference.

****

It has to be legit started based sour dough to work I believe and not the store bought stuff which has much the same issue as you have now where it can't be trusted.

Interesting to hear sourdough works for you. Have you considered making your own bread?

The starter takes forever to get off the ground (at least mine did) but you may be able to buy some. Artisan bread baked in a dutch oven works well and is easy.

Yes that's exactly what I did.

Starter isn't too hard to get going but the trick is remembering about it. The first time I forgot it on top of the fridge and many days later thought someone has spilled milk somewhere we couldn't see only to eventually remember.

But in general I dont' *need* it desperately and kind of apply a threshold logic when it comes to normal bread and just stay the hell away from seeded stuff and brown bread.

However in a restaurant or the like if I get the option always go sour dough.

If I claim that I am "allergic" to gluten, how does this hurt the people that are not gluten intolerant?

Understanding the difference between intolerant and an allergy would be a good start.

And it hurts other people who need to cater for you or make special arrangements.

So when it's based on bull**** that gets old very quickly.

People often ask me with my Crohn's if I have any special needs and I just tell them to carry on as usual and I'll conform to whatever they have on offer. But ask someone about gluten or lactose (when it isn't an actual allergy and in their head) and they'll be making lofty demands and special orders in no time and tell you all about it ad nausea.

Have you tried ferments like sauerkraut and kimchi? kefir? or would those be bad for crohn's.

Who are "you" to judge what is BS and what is not?

I don't have idiots like that in my life. Yet, if my friend tells me he does or doesn't eat diary, greens or meat I cater for them.

Just cause it's a victimless crime, doesn't make it less of a crime.

It is annoying as ****, hearing everyone being "allergic" to gluten, when all it really is, is being fat or something similar.

Coeliac disease is neither an allergy or an intolerance. It is a genetic condition that causes the body to attack the small intestines if even trace amounts of gluten is ingested. Just like people with nut allergy care if a chocolate says made in a factory that processes nuts coeliac's care the same for stuff made in a factory that has gluten.

The fad gluten free diet helps sometimes but mostly hurts as many restaurants and food suppliers claim to be gluten free to cater for that crowd when it is only 99% gluten free. That is fine for people with a mild allergy or a fad diet but it is not OK for anyone with Coeliac. There are no advertised gluten free options at any franchise restaurant of fast food joint that is actually safe for Coeliac disease. Anyways, its fine, I just thought a company like Fresh earth actually knew enough to not advertise flour as gluten free when it was not.

Have you tried Lions Mane mushroom? My son has Crohn's and it reduced his pain and discomfort by 90%

Have tried just about everything and nothing works quite as well.

Someone with legit medical condition who will tell you all your symptoms are bull**** unless you have an actual allergy.

And if you had a legit allergy we wouldn’t be having a casual conversation while you had your reaction.
