Fresh Ubuntu 9.04 keeps Hanging... help

Howsit guys...

Just finished reading "Dont Stop Me Know" by Jeremy Clarkson... Nothing to do now..Thought why not play around with Linux as i haven't before :D

So ahhhh. I downloaded the i386 distro of Ubuntu 9.04, made a bootable flash on my main Win7 rig and popped it into my other rig with another spare HDD so as to not mess up the current XP installation on the other HDD in anyway...

Installed, rebooted... But as soon as i get to the desktop after entering my logon info... not even +-10sec it hangs :erm:

System specs:

Athlon x2 3200
Jetway Nvidia MCP61 mobo
Nividia 7300le
1gig DDR667 ram

Any ideas ? pretty stumped right now... :confused:

It will most probably be some chipset drivers of some sort.

Did you configure it to automatically log into your account or are you presented with a screen that asks you your username and password?

If you get the screen with the login details, on the bottom there will be two buttons, one of the menu entries will be to have a console login, click this and you should be presented with a console.

In the console, enter username and password and issue the following command:
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade

Once this has finished reboot and see if the problem is fixed.

Not a troll at all but i will be seeing how the linux guys enjoy me putting it down like they do in windows threads.

last time that happened to me i was running out of harddrive space and gnome couldnt creates its temporary files. Make sure you did your partitioning correctly and didnt make the partition like 3gb instead of 30.
 
First try and use the VESA video driver and see if it makes a difference. If it does update your nbvidia drivers. Also switch compiz (desktop effects) off for now. Check your logs for errors.

If I recall correctly the nVidia drivers are not installed by default, you have to activate "non-free" drivers from the hardware app. If nVidia is not activated then compiz will not be working either, but as in everything on a PC, it never hurts to double check.

The log ponder revers to would be:
In console "mode" like I described above:
cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log
cat /var/log/gdm.log
cat /var/log/dmesg | grep error

That should indicate if anything is our of place.
 
I've experienced a similar problem on similar hardware before.

It seems that AMD Cool n Quiet doesn't play well with HAL. Once I disabled that, it was fine.

There should be an entry for it in System, Administration, Services or System, Preferences, Startup applications.

Can't for the life of me remember what it was called though.

You could also try disabling it in the BIOS though. Should provide the same effect.

Check whether it is Linux that is hanging or just X: Ctrl-Alt-F1 should take you to a console, which means X is hanging - problem most probably screen drivers. If you don't get to a console, something else in the X startup has broken Linux.
 
Ok well now after countless reboots.. it seems to have gone awall on me...sigh

Im gonna reinstall again...

Its a separate IDE drive...Im using the entire disk for Ubuntu.. I dc my Xp one...

Will keep you guys posted... And wow.. thanks for the help :)

Yip it worked.. after 103mbs worth of updates its finally working :D

Now do a search on Google for "10 things to do after installing Ubuntu"

This will guide you through some essential first steps.
